Cozy, family owned boutique hotel in vibrant hipster area of Södermalm, Stockholm

Hotel Frantz / Stockholm / Sweden

There is something unique with staying at a boutique hotel where the people who own it also run it. That attentive presence and heartfelt service is impossible to experience anywhere else. It is easy to understand why it is in their interest to make sure you are having the best possible time. Their livelihood kind of depends on it.

Hotel Frantz is one of these cozy, family owned hotels. The family who is running the show is the Petterssons, who have more than 30+ years in hospitality from the small-town of Vadstena, south of Stockholm. They decided to leave the small-town behind and go all in when creating Hotel Frantz and the result truly shows the passion that has gone into this project.

The hotel is situated at Slussen in Tegelhuset, a house dating back to 1647. The construction of this building was commissioned by tailor Frantz Bock (hence the name) and over the years it has housed a tobacco spinner work shop and has been a seafarer’s boarding house. And in October of 2019 the Petterssons opened the doors to Hotel Frantz after a total makeover.

This 48-key hotel is perfectly located, nestled right by the bridge between Old Town and Södermalm. The interior has been created by Gothenburg based design firm Spik Studios. I am huge fan of their work and have had the opportunity to stay at some of the other Swedish hotels that they have created the interior for such as The Vault, MJ:s, Ellery Beach House, Steam and Pigalle. Just click the links and you’ll understand why I am such a fan.

And a piece of advice. This is not a hotel where you skip breakfast. Trust me when I say that it is worth getting out of bed for. And remember, you can always return to bed after you are done stuffing your face full of all the goodies on offer.

Welcome to Hotel Frantz! Stockholm was giving us a proper snow storm when we stayed here.

The building that houses Hotel Frantz dates all the way back to 1647.

I love this quirky lamp in the corridor adding some fun and cozy.

The bed! Love the plush headboard looking like tasty ladyfinger cookies.

Cozy, classy and colorful design by Spik Studios.

I love this plaque that we found on the floor in our room. And we did as told.

This is how I wish our bathroom at home looked like. The London Tube green tiles are so beautiful.

Hands down the fanciest toilet I have ever placed my little (oh well..) dernière on.

Bathroom products from Swedish brand L:a Bruket.

This we didn’t have to use. I live with the tidiest man in the world. He makes the bed when staying at a hotel before he goes to breakfast. Love him!

The restaurant is located in the old vaults of the original building.

This is such a perfect Winter hotel. To just escape the cold and hide in these cozy vaults for a drink or two.

Time for breakfast! And consider yourself warned. Don’t miss it and come hungry!

Gotta love when there is cake for breakfast. Proper creamy strawberry and blueberry cake.

The snow just kept coming. I can highly recommend a stroll (also if you come here during any other season) on Södermalm, or Hipster Island. Many of these old wooden houses are still to be found across the island.

Maybe not in this kind of weather, but normally Stockholm is great for biking with plenty of bike paths where you can cruise around town.

Ok, just one more photo from Södermalm in Winter dress. This is Allhelgonakyrkan located in the centre of the island.

This place is perfect if you…

…are looking for a cozy boutique hotel with a rich past and the best possible location in Stockholm, right between the Old Town and vibrant hipster area Södermalm. And if you are serious about your hotel breakfast, you will not be disappointed at Hotel Frantz.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is that the hotel is family owned and run. It gives a hotel a certain homey feeling and is (almost) always a guarantee for great service. Here at Frantz you are so well looked after and you really feel important when you are a guest staying here.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to explore what is waiting for you in the other direction, if your planned direction is downtown Stockholm. If you instead continue up the hill to Södermalm you will find an area full of great restaurants (like Indio), cafés (like Lykke), great shops (like Nitty Gritty) and the nicest people in Stockholm. Yes, I live there :-)
