Boutique hotel in East London with cool retro look and perfect location

Redchurch Townhouse / London / UK

I am so happy that Soho House has decided to open some of their hotels to us mere mortals. Redchurch Townhouse is located in Shoreditch, East London right in the middle of all the action. This block has so many great restaurants, shops, bars and cafés so there is almost no need to go anywhere else.

Soho House is a members club with currently 33 properties (or houses) around the world. To stay at one of their hotels you have to be a member but there are three exceptions, Soho House in Amsterdam, in Istanbul and this one in Shoreditch, London that are all open to non-members.

Redchurch Townhouse, created by 31/44 Architects, is a very discreet building with only a small sign revealing that this is indeed a hotel. As you enter you’ll experience such a dramatic contrast from the grimey, brutal outside. The inside is the complete opposite, warm, welcoming and soft. This exquisite interior has been created by in-house designers from Soho House Design.

All in all there are 37 individually designed rooms, so this is a real boutique hotel, which is rare in London (and most other major cities) where room numbers tend to be larger. I love the familiar, intimate feeling this creates. A perfect retreat to come back to from some R&R after having spent the day exploring the English capital.

Redchurch Townhouse is wedged into place on a quiet side street, Whitby Street, which runs parallel to Redchurch Street where you’ll find a plethora of restaurants, shops, bars and coffee places.

Redchurch Townhouse had me at hello. I mean just look at this reception. Love everything about this. Unique design with just the right handpicked accessories.

And the rest of the lobby area has the same kind of unique design with terrazzo floors, wooden panels and comfy seating. Really feels like a living room which is a challenge to achieve in a common area like this.

One of the things I think they do so well at SoHo House is the design of the rooms. I am amazed about how they manage to take items that could easily feel dated but with they way they combine the different elements it just ends up feeling on point and timeless. And somehow effortless.

Never underestimate the impact of some well placed accessories in a hotel room to make it feel homey and warm.

What you’ll notice is the generous amount of lights and lamps in the room A good way to make a room feel really cosy.

When you enter your room, housekeeping has left the radio on which almost feels like coming home.

This is so great that Redchurch has refillable bottles AND that there are different kinds of products depending on what you need.

When staying here you can leave your toilet bag at home. Everything you’ll need is already waiting for you in the bathroom.

I always do a staircase test. I think it says a lot about how serious how a hotel is about design. Many hotels only make an effort with the common areas where most people hang out. Not here. The stairs are super stylish, just like the rest of the hotel.

Enough said!

I love to get up early in the morning and go for long walks as a city wakes up. The Themes river is just a short walk away and is a perfect partner for your morning walk...

…and if you cross the river you have famous Borough Market on the other side where you can get the some of the best coffee in London at Monmouth Coffee.

This place is perfect if you…

…are a fan of East London and want to live right in the middle of the action. If you appreciate small boutique hotels where you are surrounded by great shopping, food and interesting people, this is your place!

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the personal service. It is so rare especially when staying in big city hotels that you are met with warmth and you feel welcomed and important when you arrive. Or actually it isn’t only when you arrive,. it is trough out the entire stay. Other big city hotels, please take note!

The quality booster…

…is that when you stay at Redchurch Townhouse you never have to bring anything. Whatever you might need is right there in your room from tooth brushes to umbrellas to condoms to artisanal cookies. That is a real quality booster.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to eat at on-site restaurant, Cecconi’s. I especially want to recommend having breakfast there. It is to die for which is why its is equally popular with the locals. And if you do want to venture out Indian restaurant Dishoom never disappoints and neither does Breakfast Club. Both places are a short walk from the hotel
