Funky, eclectic Malmö hotel with a welcoming atmosphere

MJ’s Hotel / Malmö / Sweden

I have featured hotels from Swedish hotel chain Ess Group before (Steam and Pigalle). Ess was started by a couple of creative guys from my hometown Gothenburg with an ambition to create destination hotels oozing of fun, quirky design. I appreciate their work so much since they aren’t afraid of using color, bold prints and filling their properties with eclectic design pieces. And people! All of this applies to MJ’s Hotel, their only hotel (so far) in Sweden’s third city, Malmö.

When creating MJ’s they were looking to create a spot with an open door and a wide-open mind, and I think they have succeeded. This to me is something you see in many hotels across the globe but so far isn’t as common in Sweden. You know, those kind of hotels that is a meeting spot for locals as well as the people who are currently staying at the hotel. I love these kind of hotels. Where you step through the entrance and you are met by a warmth, a certain kind of energy, where you want to linger as long as possible.

When you enter the MJ’s you step straight into the bar. The reception is actually also the bar. The mood is dark and eclectic with flamingo lamps, candelabras, a photo booth and the famous plush flamingo arm chair. Walk through the heavy velvet drapes and you’ll enter the atrium where you’ll find the popular restaurant (remember to book a table!). The dark and moody look continues in the corridors but it is disputed by a colorful, bird- and palm tree carpet that brings in some playfulness.

All in all there are 68 spacious rooms. The hotel is located next to Lilla Torg, a popular meeting place for the locals and visitors alike, with plenty of restaurants and bars to keep you busy all night long.

I can’t wait to see what this talented group of people do next. Whatever it is, I’m sure it is going to be great.

The dark, almost mysterious corridors are brightened up by this statement carpet.

Our room had a look that almost felt dated, but in a very good way with an old looking rotary phone on the bedside table.

Why have a boring “Do not disturb” sign to hang on your door when you can have a tassle?

Photo booth and a flamingo chair should be a staple in all hotel lobbies.

I love how you go from the dark to the light. The lobby/bar area is dark and sombre and and the restaurant is bright and green.

This place is perfect if you…

…stay at a really cool hotel in Malmö with an international vibe. Malmö is known for being a creative, forward looking town which makes is surprising that there aren’t more interesting, unique hotels to stay at. This is the hotel to stay at in Malmö according to me.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the bold use of colors, patterns and quirky design pieces. This is something that is often the case with the Ess hotels, that they dare to take it all the way. And the result is something that stands out and that leaves a lasting memory.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…Malmö Saluhall. A contemporary food court located a short walk from the hotel. There are so many great outlets in this food Mecca, created by two siblings Martin & Nina Karyd together with famous Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh. So it is worth coming here both for the food and the building.
