Warm, colorful beach resort just outside Stockholm with an air of 70:s Miami

Ellery Beach House / Stockholm / Sweden

Right outside Stockholm there is an island called Lidingö. At the far end of this island, facing the sea, you’ll find this unique hotel. It is called Ellery Beach House a true destination hotel.

Ellery is the 10th hotel of Scandi chain, Ess Hotels (I have stayed at three of their hotels before: MJ:s, Pigalle and Steam). What you’ll always get when staying at one of their hotels is unique, thought through design, great service and good food. What else do you need?

So how to best describe the design? They share that they have taken inspiration from Palm Springs in the 60:s but to me I can’t help but think about the classic 80:s sitcom Golden Girls based in Miami. I am sure if those ladies got an opportunity to design a hotel, this is how it would look. Warm, rich colors, patterns, a lot of plants, golden wood and rattan furniture. You can picture Blanche and Dorothy sitting in one of the couches munching cheese cake.

The impressive red brick building that Ellery is situated in was built at the end of the 1960:s by IBM. It was their training centre for the Nordic region until it was sold and turned into a hotel in 2003. It was sold to Ess Group and they did a total revamp and opened up the doors in 2020. Today this is a fun, buzzing beach resort with 122 rooms. A place you come to to play, have fun, eat, drink and relax.

Ellery is located on the far end of Lidingö, an island just outside Stockholm. Surrounded by the sea and pine trees. It feels like you are far from everything although this is only 20 min from central Stockholm.

This amazing building was created between 1966-1969. A brutal brick building securely placed overlooking the entry to Stockholm..

Warm colors, exposed brick and patterned fitted carpets makes the hotel feels welcoming already when you enter the corridor.

Our room was dressed in golden wood and accentuated with fun lamps and different textiles.

Vintage industrial feel in our bathroom with exposed pipes and retro tiles.

A cozy corner of our room. Love when walls are painted in two different tones.

There is so much space at Ellery. Different areas where you can kick back and relax with several bars, two restaurants and endless plush sofas.

The lobby area is built around a beautiful fire place. Perfect place to relax if you like us, come here in Winter.

A hairy lamp… Why not!? :-)

I am obsessed with this fitted carpet. The pattern is everything!

M walking around exploring all the different parts of the hotel. Had to drag him away from these comfy daybeds.

A warming outdoors fire place overlooking the sea and in the background you can see the lights from the Swedish capital.

Stockholm is beautiful in Winter when the ice is starting to settle on Lake Mälaren. And the best thing is that downtown Stockholm is only 20 min from Ellery.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are coming to Stockholm and you are looking for a place to stay that is set in a beautiful, natural surrounding but still close enough to downtown. And if you are a spa fanatic, this is your place

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the eclectic design. If you’ve read this blog before you know I am a huge fan of hoteliers who dare to break the norm and create hotels that stand out. A hotel that feels unique. The interior at Ellery feels wam and welcoming and stand out with all the colors and mismatching furniture.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…is to go down to the sauna down by the sea, especially if you like us stay here during Winter. To go for a sauna follow by a (quick) dip in the cold, cold sea and straight back to the sauna is a tradition in this part of the world and something you just have to try.
