Hotel Altes Hafenamt / Hamburg / Germany

25hours Hotels started their journey in Hamburg and is today a chain with 13 hotels. All of them in the central parts of Europe except for their latest hotel which they recently opened in Dubai. They have a mission and that is to create soulful spaces and memories.

Hotel Altes Hafenamt is located in the newly developed Hafen City area. This used to be a run down, somewhat seedy part of town that started a transformation when construction started on the renowned Elbphilharmonie back in 2007. And after that, gentrification followed.

The building that Hotel Altes Hafenamt is situated in the oldest building in Hafen City and therefore it is listed. All in all there are 49 rooms, designed by German firm Dreimeta. What they have created is a design that feels rich in color and patterns. The heritage of the building is kept intact and the brick walls creates a solid frame for the playful, warm design. Something that you’ll find in all of the 25hours Hotels are fun, cheeky messages where you’d least expect it, from the facade all the way to the pillow in your bed.

Welcome to the Altes Hafenamt! Situated in this magnificent, listed brick building in the old harbor area of Hamburg.

The corridor of the hotel is an homage to its past. It is like walking through a museum with photos from back in the day, sharing stories from life in the harbor.

A good use of two old doors, to transform them into a headboard.

I love this area. All the colors, patterns and the brick wall that when combined creates such a warm, vibrant feeling.

I love myself a good hotel shop and this one might be the one with the coolest display. And probably the most difficult to keep clean and dust free…

The Hafen City. This used to be the old harbor that has been transformed into a popular residential area.

The amazing Elbphilharmonie building in Hafen City. The opening of this place was in a way the starting point of the development of this new district of Hamburg.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are heading to Hamburg and you want to stay centrally but not too centrally. If you like smaller city hotels instead of huge, generic ones this is your place.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the darkness. I’ve always liked dark hotels. They feel so much cozier. And another thing I like with this hotel is that it is an old building that has been repurposed and given a new life as a hotel.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to see if you can manage to get tickets to the Elbphilharmonie, the new concert hall in Hamburg that is located down the road from the hotel. If you don’t manage to get any tickets the outside is worth a visit anyhow. It is a stunning piece of architecture.
