Eclectic Gothenburg design hotel with a Parisian inspired interior

Hotel Pigalle / Gothenburg / Sweden

There is a Scandiavian hotel chain called ESS that is making a mark in the Scandinavian hotel and restaurant scene. They are based in my hometown of Gothenburg and that is also where you’ll find this hotel, the Hotel Pigalle. Where the name comes from? They want to offer a little slice of Parisian decadence in this northern outpost.

ESS has a long standing collaboration with Spik xx and you can almost sense their presence when staying at Hotel Pigalle. Their signature brand is that they never shy away from powerful prints and colors. They dare to mix and match in a way that would scare the living daylights out of any given Scandi-chic minimalist. The result? Something unique and really interesting. A design that leaves a mark.

Hotel Pigalle has 60 uniquely designed rooms spread over four floors. You enter the hotel through Bar Amuse and it almost feels like you are transferred back in time to some seedy bar in Paris. For a moment I almost felt like one of the extras in the film Moulin Rouge.

The beautiful Palace Building where Hotel Pigalle is situated dates back to the 18th Century. It is located right in the center of Gothenburg.

The corridors are dark and somber with printed wallpaper that are so beautiful.

Fitted carpets, plush velvet sofa and wood panelling and a massive ceramic stove with hand painted ornaments. I have never stayed in a room with this kind of look before. And I love it!

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…want to go on a city break and you want to splurge and treat yourself. This would normally be out of our price range but found a great offer during the pandemic so we decided we deserved a luxurious break from the everyday.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is that this hotel is so unique. I know I like to use that word a lot but the design at Hotel Pigalle is really unique. I am a huge fan of Spik Studios and their work. They are bold and almost a little brutal in their choices.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is the area around Magasinsgatan. This is where you’ll find the best shopping in town. And the best coffee. Also swing by Brogyllen nearby for some classic Swedish cinnamon buns. Don’t miss to experience some of the beautiful nature. Either the woods and lakes east of town or the rugged archipelago.
