Cosy Utrecht boutique hotel with an air of NYC loft living

Mother Goose / Utrecht / Netherlands

The Netherlands is a country full of fun medium size cities. And all these cities have an array of interesting and unique hotels. This one is called Mother Goose and is located in Utrecht, a short train ride from Amsterdam.

The hotel is located in the historic city centre with everything right on your doorstep (like Daen’s which is a café, clothes and accessories store, florist, bakery and B&B all in one. You can read about my stay at the B&B here).

This building has a long history that dates back to the 11th century when this was a so called small city castle. Since then this has been a chemist, a bookstore, a bakery, a furniture maker and from 1931 to 1990 a mattress factory. When the factory moves out squatters moved in and they stayed until they were thrown out in 2013. The current owners bought it with the intention of turning it into a hotel and after some much needed TLC out came Mother Goose.

Mother Goose is spread across 4 floors and all the 23 rooms are individually designed where each floor has an assigned color scheme with a goose connection: white, grey, black or brown. The interior has been created together with Morph Design, centered around a perfect bed (which makes sense with the mattress factory past of the building) and a home-away-from-home feeling.

Mother Goose Hotel is located on a quiet side street in the central parts of town, within crawling distance of great shopping, culture and restaurants.

A new day begins at Borgo Eibn as the sun is slowly rising behind the mountains. So how does one spend a day at this amazing mountain resort, one might wonder…?

The small, cute reception area.

Our room had a NYC loft kind of look. I am a huge fan of the exposed brick wall and the repurposed head board.

It is great to see how they have used many different material with totally different textures combining rough and smooth, hard and soft.

…it was time to hit breakfast. Yum!

The view from our room. Gotta love a window you can sit in and watch the world go by.

Breakfast is served. How appealing does this look!?

After filling our bodies with all those Italian breakfast goodies we walked it all off (yeah, right…) through our hike down to the lake. So stunning! It almost looks unreal.

I don’t know if it is mandatory at Dutch hotels to have bikes on loan since I still haven’t stayed at one that doesn’t. Regardless, it is so great that this is the case since it is the best way to get around and explore the city.

Ok, taking a stroll with the husband along the canals is not to shabby either.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…like small city hotels. This one has only 23 rooms and great, attentive service.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the home-away-from-home feeling that they have managed to create in the rooms. There are just the right amount of accessories to make this feel more like a home than a generic hotel room.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to follow the canal that goes all around the old city centre. It is a great walk anytime of the day and anytime of year where you get to see all of the historic (and modern) parts of Utrecht. And there are plenty of places to stop for a coffee and some traditional Dutch appeltart
