Flushing Meadows / Munich / Germany

One of my all time favorite cities is the Bavarian capital Munich, Germany. The reason why I like it? It is called the most northern Italian town. That says it all. Munich, although located in super structured Germany, it has a little more of the ”stop, relax and enjoy” feeling compared to its German siblings.

Munich has a pretty good variety of good hotels to choose from and one of my favorites is the Flushing Meadows Hotel. It is perfectly located for a city trip, right next to the Gärtnerplatzviertel, which is an area with great shopping, bars, cafes and restaurants.

If you don’t know where Flushing Meadows is located you wouldn’t necessarily know there is a hotel there. It is discreetly hidden behind a large metal door on street level. You have to take the elevator up to the top floor where you’ll find the small reception area as well as the bar and outdoor terrace.

The 16 rooms are designed by different creatives (and a random local carpenter) with unique views of what they want a hotel room to look like. The thing that connects them is that they all have over 4 meters ceiling height and plenty of daylight. Flushing Meadows is a member of German hotel community Design Hotels which is always a reliable quality stamp.

Welcome to Flushing Meadows. There aren’t that many hints telling you that this building houses one of Munich’s coolest hotels…

…but look closer and you’ll spot the discreet entrance.

A very clean corridor with an industrial feel to it.

Our bed was actually suspended from the ceiling, hangin in mid air. Like sleeping in a really comfy hammock.

I am a big fan of when there is a proper seating area in the hotel room. Especially when it looks this good.

Me running in Englischer Garten, the world’s largest city park.

The local surfer scene is very much alive an kicking although Munich is miles and miles from the nearest sea.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…want to go on a city weekend and want to stay in a cool place in the middle of where the action is.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the outdoors sky bar. I always love a hotel with a bar with a view. Sit down with a cold Aperol and take in the sights.

What not to miss when staying here…

…there are so many things but I will highlight two. One is to go to a traditional Stube for a real Wienerschnitzel. Our favorite is Wirtshaus sum Straubinger a short walk from the hotel. The other thing is to check out the surfers in Englischer Garten. Such a fantastic thing were local surfers use an outlet of the river Eisbach Welle to practice their skills.
