A perfect hotel set in the Italian Alps where you are treated like royalty
Milla Montis / Maranza / South Tyrol /Italy
This is one of those hotels where you want to check in and never leave. If you don’t trust me, just have a look at the photos in this post and I think you will understand why.
To get to Milla Montis you have to drive uphill for miles to arrive at this architectural masterpiece. The hotel is situated high up on a mountain with splendid views of the Isarco River Valley below, surrounded by the dramatic Dolomites. All of this combined almost becomes too much to take in.
The hotel is a passion project for owners Franziska and Roland Oberhofer. Roland actually grew up on the farm next door which is still a operational agriturismo. The architect behind this incredible building is Peter Pichler who used to work both with world famous Zaha Hadid and equally famous Rem Koolhaas. The structure is inspired by traditional South Tyrolean agriculture buildings but all dressed in dark wood. Like a black diamond in the middle of a lush Alpine meadow.
Milla Montis opened its doors late 2020 and the inside is just as beautiful as the outside with simple, direct and authentic design. A lot of blond wood, stone, loden and other pure materials. There are only 30 rooms so there is an intimate feeling here which I really appreciate. This feeling is not only a result of the design but even more so by the amazing service from the people working here.
Basically this is as close to a perfect hotel as one could get. Just come here and see for yourself!
The geometric shapes and the dark wood makes this into such a statement piece.
The front of the hotel which feels more like the back.
The reception gives you an idea of the design scheme of Milla Montis. Clean lines, blond wood and some contemporary pieces to liven things up.
The bar area flooded by lights from the massive windows.
A coffee with a view. We were offered something to drink just as we set foot on the property. Of course we asked to have it on the terrace.
The morning light fills the discreetly designed corridor of the hotel
A bed with a view. So great to go to sleep with the door open so the cool Alp air could fill the room.
Me hanging out in the pool, enjoying the peace and quiet. And the views.
This is a quality booster in my book. Being offered home made complimentary ice follies to cool off in the hot Italian sun. Other hotels, please take note!
There is an extensive spa at the hotel. This was something I had never tried before. A hay sauna.
The view from my sun lounger. I couldn’t decide what was more appealing, to look at the view of the valley or the building.
Time for a apertivo before dinner.
M enjoying the cool morning air, wrapped in his duvet.
The early birds gets the pool all to themselves.
Ok, just one more photo of the building just because it is so special.
And just one more photo of the pool.
The breakfast had everything you could wish for and then some.
When staying here you almost have to go for a hike. This was taken as we were hiking towards the top of the mountain. You can see Milla Montis in the middle of the photo.
RG inside info
This place is perfect if you…
…like me love mountains. If you love how small they make you feel. If you love what amazing views they provide for you. And if you’re also a fan of authentic, Alp-inspired design, this is without a single doubt your place.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the architecture. It is so magnificent. Yes, I know it is a big word but this building needs big words. According to rumors it was all ”happy happy joy joy” among the locals when Milla Montis was built but now the locals have grown to love this hotel just as much as I do.
The quality booster…
…ok, listen to this. When we were laying in the shade under a parasol in the hot Italian sun, all of a sudden a waiter comes around with home made ice lollies, free of charge. When we arrived just before official check in our room wasn’t ready so we were offered to sit down and enjoy a complimentary beverage in the bar. And the third thing, when they saw we were two men, they alerted housekeeping so when we got our room there were two XL bathrobes instead of the traditional gender norm set up of one smaller and one larger.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…to hike. Or bike. Or ski. Just do something where you get to enjoy the nature that surrounds the hotel. There are plenty of hiking trails so just tie your laces, fill up your water bottle and go out and explore. Oh, and remember some sunscreen and some kind of hat. The Alp sun is fierce!
