A foodie hotel with a taste of Havana in central Texas
Hotel Havana / San Antonio / TX / USA
San Antonio, Texas is a city that is fairly unknown to many of us Europeans which is interesting considering this is the 7th largest city in the US. I ended up here on a cross country drive many years ago and was so happy to get the opportunity to come back to this open, relaxed Texan town, home to the Alamo.
It is here in San Antonio where you’ll find Hotel Havana. This hotel is part of Bunkhouse Group, a company with 8 really interesting hotels, 7 in the US and 1 in Mexico. I’ve had the chance to stay at one of their properties before, the amazing El Cosmico in Marfa, Texas, that you can read more about if you click here. And I must say that I am so eager to stay at the other 7.
Hotel Havana has a strong nod to the Cuban capital. It is situated in a beautiful building dating back to 1914, built in a style called Mediterranean Revival. Some of the design features that stood out to me when staying here were the old pine floors, the wrought iron beds and the large, shuttered windows.
The hotel is located a short walk from downtown San Antonio, by the San Antonio River, overlooking the picturesque river walk so a perfect starting point to explore the city from.

This place is perfect if you…
…want to go to San Antonio and stay at a hotel with some soul. There are plenty of hotel options in this large city but I don’t think any of them can bring the same kind of authenticity as Hotel Havana. I’ve never been to Cuba myself but somehow I am pretty sure this is exactly what it would feel like to go there.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the Ocho Restaurant, that is located in the winter garden, attached to the hotel. A bright, airy and colorful restaurant that serves great pan-latin food all day long.
What not to miss when staying here…
…is to put on some comfy shoes and explore San Antonio by foot. This is one of the few American cities that is perfect to walk in. Start by following the River Walk that you’ll find right outside the hotel entrance and follow it downtown. And may I suggest a stop at one of the many watering holes along the river.
