Calm city hotel in wild Dublin with contemporary design

The Wilder Townhouse / Dublin / Ireland

The Wilder in Dublin has everything you look for in a city hotel. Or maybe I should say, everything I look for in a city hotel. It is located on a picturesque, tree-lined street, a short walk from St. Stephen’s Green in a fancy part of town.

The first thing that meets you is a beautiful Victorian building, with its red brick facade which is typical for that era. It was built in 1878 as a home for retired governesses and over the years this has been both a retirement home and an artist studio. In 2016 it was purchased by the Whelehan’s and opened as a hotel in 2018.

Although the building has a rich history, the interior is all about contemporary design. Every room has been uniquely designed so no two rooms are the same. What they do have in common is the bold use of patterns and colors. It makes me think of other hotels that I have stayed at such that also dared to be different. So if you like this one you might also appreciate The Vault in Helsingborg, Sweden and Pigalle in Gothenburg. Sweden.

I love this entrance! How classic red brick is combined with Moroccan style floor tiles.

The small, cute reception area, which is actually the most discreet part of the hotel where marble plays centre stage.

When I entered this bathroom I realized that this hotel was probably going to surprise us. I haven’t come across too many hotels with monkey wallpapered bathrooms… And I live for it!

Old and new comes together. A great way to breath life into a hotel room is to bring in some vintage elements, just like they had done in our room.

The colors in the breakfast room really pop.

This place is perfect if you…

…are coming to Dublin and you want to stay at a central hotel but not in the middle of all the madness. The Wilder is just a short walk from downtown and a perfect hotel to come back to after a day/evening/night exploring the exciting Irish capital.

My favorite thing about this place…

…I am always a huge fan of hotels that dare to use colors and patterns and by doing so making a design statement. There are a lot of hotels with muted color schemes around so it is always great to stay at these kind of hotels that are everything but discreet.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to visit local favorite Avoca. It is a small department store that has been around forever and on the top floor there is a restaurant where they have the best scones ever.
