Vigilius Mountain Resort / Lana / Italy

Aaaah… Vigilius… This place is really something else. This hotel sits high up on San Vigilius mountain in Lana, South Tyrol. The only way to get here is by cable car so the uniqueness of this hotel starts already at arrival.

The hotel is created to look like a massive tree that has fallen over and it so great to see how it just melts into the surroundings. The man behind the design is local superstar Matteo Thun. When he was commissioned to create this place the owner Ulrich Ladurner apparently said ”you will not be able to create anything more beautiful than this place already is”. I think it is questionable since I think the building is on par with the surroundings.

When Vigilius opened in 2003 it was the first class A Climate House in Italy and the eco mindset is something is something that has been part of this hotel’s everyday since its beginnings.

So what about the inside? It mirrors the outside. Blond wood is the main feature and is matched with stone and soft concrete. The only color that keeps popping up to challenge the softness is a vivid red. It is a design isn’t in your face, rather the opposite. It is very easy on the eye which enhances the relaxaing atmosphere. And I also have to mention the food which is beyond and so is the spa. Well, basically everything is one level above.

Welcome to Vigilius!

Vigilius is built to resemble a tree trunk that is laying down.

The “trunk” of the fallen tree. Here is where you’ll find the beautifully designed hotel rooms, spread over two floors.

The main building where you’ll find reception and the two restaurants. To the right is the cable car that will take you back down to the valley.

The atrium is all about straight lines and light. I love how the sun creates a straight line that matches the design.

Time to say good night.

A clever solution to create two sections in the open room by adding a concrete partition wall, It also adds another element to all the blond wood.

Me enjoying the sun rising over the mountains of South Tyrol.

I love how the pool is flooded in daylight from the windows and how the larch trees are reflected in the water.

M heading towards the sauna.

We went back to the spa every day after dinner. Then we had the place all to ourselves.

Italians sure know how to make their coffee. And it always taste better with a view.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…love views, design and service and if you are looking for a place to unwind. You are taken care of as soon as you step of the cable car until you leave to go back down to reality.

My favorite thing about this place…

…this is difficult… I think I will say the design. I love to see when a building fits into its surroundings like this one does. How they live in harmony with each other.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to go for a short hike before breakfast. It is the best way to create as much space as possible for the amazing breakfast. I also recommend to have early dinner, then go for a swim in the spa. We ended up having the place all to ourselves.
