Unique city hotel with small space living in understated Luxembourg

Graace Hotel / Luxembourg City / Luxembourg

If you have read this blog before you know I am sucker for when someone takes an old building and gives it a new chance. Especially if the building has been abandonded and when it is saved from being demolished. This all applies to this place where you’ll today find the Graace Hotel. On this site was once a metal work shop belonging to the Graas Brothers (hence the name).

Steve Krack, who is a self-taught architect came across this site in 2012 and decided to buy it but it wasn’t until 2017 that construction began.

Already when approaching the massive steel door you know you are in for something unique. Once you open the door it is like stepping into another world. A world of greenery, bricks, wood, rust and concrete. The old original facade of the factory are still there but the interior is totally transformed into a warm, open and welcoming space. It almost looks like a deserted old factory where nature has taken over and broken through the old steel and concrete structures.

All in all there are 28 rooms. This is full on compact living, warm and comfortable with rustic wood interior. The profile is eco-friendly and only sustainable materials have been used while keeping the soul and industrial character of the original site intact. One of the coolest compact living features is the bathroom where the two doors open to create space for the shower in the middle of the room.

All rooms have either a balcony or a terrace and it that is not enough for you there is plenty of spaces hidden throughout the hotel, like my favorite which was the rooftop garden. A perfect place to enjoy a beer and a burger from the onsite food truck while the sun was slowly setting.

Welcome to the Graace Hotel. The old factory walls are still around as a frame to the hotel.

The hotel is waiting for you behind this massive steel door.

The onsite café.

I love, love, love this mix of material and the open space between the two structures. Like a garden of steel and greenery.

These vintage industrial lamps are beautiful.

Compact living. Our room felt like one of those cabins we used to stay in when going on ski vacations in the Swedish mountains in my childhood.

This place is perfect if you…

…want to experience something different. This is a social hotel where it feels like it is almost frowned upon not to socialize with the other guests. The design and layout of the hotel really invites you to connect.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the bold mix of materials. Wood, concrete, rusty steel, bricks and gravel comes together to create a whole. And the ”material” that tops it all off is all the greenery. The hotel is full of trees, bushes, plants, flowers that softens the industrial look.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to take a trip into the countryside. Luxembourg is hilly, green and beautiful (especially for us living in the flat as a pancake Netherlands). Scenic Moselle River valley is just a short 20 min car ride away where you can enjoy some great wines and solid German food.
