Unexpected Bali-inspired eco hotel with jungle feel in downtown Copenhagen

Manon Les Suites / Copenhagen / Denmark

There is a Danish hotel chain called Guldsmeden. Sandra and Marc Weinert who is the couple behind the Guldsmeden brand opened their first hotel in Århus in 1999. It was located on Guldsmeden Street, hence the name of the first hotel and later the chain. Today there are 9 hotels, located in Copenhagen, Oslo, Reykjavik and Berlin. On top of this they also rent out a villa on the French Riviera and there is resort in Bali. Guldsmeden hotels are based on four pillars: Luxurious simplicity, Happy hostmanship, Unpretentious atmosphere and Uncompromising sustainability. They have a goal to be able to offer a stay with as little negative environmental impact as possible.

The Guldsmeden hotel featured in this post is called Manon Les Suites and is located in the centre of Copenhagen. It is one of those hotels where it is impossible to know what is waiting behind the entrance. It is like you step into some kind of parallel universe, a universe of an eclectic looking, lush rain forest. When I first saw the pool area I stood in awe for what felt like several minutes. I had to remind myself that we were still in the Danish capital.

In total there are 87 rooms at Manon Les Suites and like all the other Guldsmeden hotels the design is a clash between Bali and Scandi. I am always fascinated about how well that combo works. This was my first stay here but not my last. I will be back!

Welcome to Guldsmeden Manon les Suites in Copenhagen!

This is the entrance to one of the most unexpected hotels I have ever stayed at. The abundance of plants surrounding the entrance is a hint of what you can expect on the inside.

The scooter has become a signature feature of the Guldsmeden hotels. This one in a bright red.

The beautifully tiled reception is the first thing that meets you when entering the hotel.

I always take the stairs when staying at hotels. To me it has become a sign if a hotel takes their concept all the way or if they just leave it untouched and boring. The stairs at Manon Les Suites is everything but.

They have used a lot of tiles in the design in the hotel and it really works. This is the hall outside our room.

To design the hotel corridor with tiles is very unusual.. This photo is of the door to our room.

Bali meets Scandinavia. A design marriage that works so well. Considering the geographic distance it sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does.

The pool is so extravagant and amazing. Feels like you are not in Denmark anymore.

The main feature of the hotel is the pool. It is so extravagant and amazing. Feels like you are not in Denmark anymore but somewhere in an exotic jungle in a faraway land.

The sun is up, so are we after a good night sleep, ready to hit the streets.

This place is perfect if you…

…are someone that, even when staying at an urban hotel, likes to spend a lot of time at your hotel. If you are someone that spends all your waking hours on the run, there are more suitable hotels for you. This is almost more like a barefoot resort in downtown Copenhagen. An escape from the outside world.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the pool. It is difficult not to chose the pool. But I also want to mention the roof top bar/restaurant. A perfect place for an afternoon drink while the sun is slowly setting.

What not to miss when staying here…

…I always recommend getting your hands on a bike when in Copenhagen. It is the best way to explore this city. Just watch out for the other cyclists. They can be pretty fierce.
