Former brewery turned design hotel with modern edge in Münster, Germany

Factory Hotel / Münster / Germany

One of my favorite things is to find hidden hotel gems where and when you least expect it. When you travel off the beaten track and you come across unique hotels with so much soul. That was totally the case with this hotel, The Factory in Münster, Germany. Münster is a city located in the northwestern part of Germany in the region of Nordrhein-Westfalen, close to the Dutch border.

The Factory Hotel has in total 144 rooms, 3 restaurants and 1 bar. It opened its doors in 2008 in what used to be the old Germania brewery. The old, brick building was salvaged (luckily!) and a sleek, modern looking, concrete structure was added. I love when this happens. When an old building with so much history gets a new contemporary friend. That kind of clash is so beautiful. The mastermind behind this is architect Christian Olufemi. The Factory is a member of Design Hotels which is always a solid quality stamp in my book. And it is easy to see why when staying here.

I have such a weak spot for this kind of brutalist architecture. There is something about the straight lines and geometric patterns that really appeal to me.

A lot of the original features of the old brewery have been preserved and integrated into the design. I am obsessed with this wall. There is so much going on. This maximalism is such a great contrast with the brutal concrete exterior.

I love how rough around the edges this hotel is. That they have left a lot of unpolished surfaces. That rawness really appeals to me.

A very modern-looking, transparent elevator shaft.

The old facade is now a wall connecting the old a and new structure. Here you se M on is way to our room. The way the light hits the corridor is pure architectural magic.

Our bedroom. Love how the play with light continues in the room.

The stern concrete walls are softened by felt falls and wooden floors.

The town of Münster is such a cute well preserved town, where most of the central buildings date back to medieval times. It is perfect for a weekend away.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…want to discover something out of the ordinary. To stay at a really cool design hotel in a traditional German town.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is how the old and the new building come together. That kind of architectural clash gives me goose bumps.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to explore the city. It is a very cute city centre with plenty of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a fresh, German beer ”al fresco”.
