Urban design hotel full of character and a big portion of Danish “hygge”
Hotel SP34 / Copenhagen / Denmark
The Danes know design. They have got it down to the T. You know that kind of design that feels so effortless, like they just don’t care (even though you know it is the complete opposite). So when going to Copenhagen my expectations are always really high. And lucky for me there is a small Danish chain, Brøchner Hotels (owned by couple Mette and Søren Brøchner), that always manage to meet my expectations. Brøchner has 4 hotels in Copenhagen (and a hostel in Denmarks second city, Århus) and I have to admit, this one is my favorite. It is called SP34.
SP34 is located in the Latin Quarters of Copenhagen. The hotel is named after the street it situated in. This is an area with colorful buildings along narrow city streets.
This used to be a popular and somewhat more maximalistic hotel called Hotel Fox, and when it changed owners it went from bold to subtle. The design is based on sombre tones that never provoke, that are accompanied by tactile materials such as wood, leather and stone. But if you look around there are some pops of color, some raw concrete and eclectic pieces that disturbs the calm design which makes the totality even more appealing in my eyes.
All in all there are 118 rooms spread over two buildings that has been connected to create one maze like hotel. We had our room in the courtyard which we appreciated since the Latin Quarters has a lot of bars and restaurants and we do like our calm when it is time to call it a night.
RG inside info
This place is perfect if you…
…want to stay in the middle of the action, right in the centre of the Danish capital. If you like discreet Danish design and you don’t mind that the rooms are on the smaller side, this is your place.
My favorite thing about this place…
…was the courtyard. I like when it becomes a place where people linger. A place to relax after a day on the mountain with something cold to drink by the glow of an open fire.
The quality booster…
…is wine o’clock. Every day between 17-18 they have wine hour in the reception/lobby where they invite you to swing by for a glass or two. This is standard at all Brøchner Hotels and I think it is such a brilliant concept.
Selected by RG Coffee Index…
…is 5 of 5. Handmade, proper cappuccino in the morning makes RG one happy camper.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…to visit Stilleben. A store that sells the most beautiful things for your home. Located right next to another favorite, Torvehallerna, an indoor/outdoor food market. The best coffee in town from Coffee Collective is to be found here.
