Circularity focused hotel on sunny Bornholm with classic Danish design

Green Solution House / Rønne / Bornholm / Denmark

Sunshine Island… No, I am not talking about some remote South Pacific island but the pearl of the Baltic Sea, Bornholm. Bornholm belongs to Danmark but is situated closer to neighboring Sweden, just over an hour by ferry from the mainland. Bornholm has been renamed the Sunshine Island due to the extensive amount of hours of sunshine per year. This makes it a very popular Summer destination for Danes, Swedes and Germans.

It is here you’ll find GSH Hotel. This stands for Green Solution House and it says it all. This hotel is all about circularity while at the same time offering a design hotel experience. I am a huge fan of their tag line: ”When staying here, you don’t have to think about making sustainable choices. We have already done them for you”. This is an area where I’d wish more hotels followed suite.

The design is fully committed to Scandic-chic with blond wood furniture and minimalist aesthetic. It is like where Scandi meets Shaker style with discreet and functional design elements everywhere you look. The main part of the furniture is from Danish producer Skagerak which fits so well into the overall look.

The hotel is located in the outskirts of Bornholm’s capital, Rønne, just a short walk through the forest to the beach. A perfect location for a Danish Summer holiday.

The massive, impressive entrance to GSH Hotel.

Welcome to GSH Hotel! The entrance is massive. And impressive…

…but it is even more impressive looking when you enter from the back.

This part of the hotel is the most recent addition. A section almost entirely made out of timber. And it looks good too!

The architects behind this beautiful structure is 3XN and they had an intensely challenging sustainability brief when they created this wooden add on.

A green plant wall underlines the green profile of the hotel.

This is my favorite photo from our stay at GSH. Love the light in this picture.

Wood, wood and more wood.

An artful display of Bornholm flora and where you’ll find the different plants.

I love real plants in hotels. Makes the place feel alive.

The clean design continues throughout the hotel.

In the restaurant there is art portraying different Bornholm landmarks. This is the Svaneke water tower designed by the same man who created the Sydney Opera House, Danish designer Jørn Utzon.

Classic Danish design.

If you follow the stairs to the top floor…

…you’ll find a roof top terrace and this sauna.

Best way to cool down after the sauna is an ice cold bucket shower.

The backyard where you’ll meet the friendly sheep. Or you can just enjoy the uninterrupted views.

The backyard where you’ll meet…

…these guys. There are sheep in the backyard of the hotel. Super cute and super friendly.

In the white house with the chimney you’ll find Kalas Kalas where you can get a really good cup of coffee and something sweet. And don’t miss their homemade ice cream.

If you come to Bornholm on a Friday, make sure to stop by Jensen’s Bakery in downtown Rønne for Friday Buns. They only make these on Fridays which is probably the best way ever to segway into the weekend.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…don’t want to negotiate with your sustainable choices while staying at a hotel. I believe there are few hotels that takes the circularity agenda as serious as GSH. And they also look good while doing it.

My favorite thing about this place…

…on top of the sustainable profile I like that the hotel has sheep around. They are super friendly and don’t mind the occasional cuddle.

What not to miss when staying here…

…there is so much to do and to experience on Bornholm. Since I like my ”fika”, as we say in Swedish (means coffee and something sweet) I really want to recommend Kalas in Sandvig, one of the many cute villages on the island. Well worth a visit.
