A straight forward, simple Italian hotel next to Lake Garda

Goti Hotel / Torbole sul Garda / South Tyrol / Italy

This place holds a dear place in my heart. Lake Garda in north Italy. We have been coming here since I was a child to spend lazy days by and in this chilly Alpine lake, surrounded by dramatic mountains and a gelato stand within arms length. My family still comes here in the Summer so we have made it a habit to meet up with them. The only issue has been to try to find a unique, not too over-prized hotel with some character. And I have finally found one. This is the Goti Hotel.

To me this is a typical, Italian summer vacation hotel. A hotel where you are meant to check in for at least one week and make it your temporary home. This is something the Italians do so well (among everything else they excel at like food, culture, fashion, wine, ice cream…). This results in a relaxed, slow vibe where no one is rushing which is perfect once you have adjusted to that rhythm. And just to make sure you this is possible breakfast is served all the way until 11:30.

All in all there are 35 rooms and the design is stylish but still pared down with muted colors and whites. Flowing, thin curtains is the only frilly thing with this hotel, which otherwise is straight forward. The Garda region attracts sporty types from all over to come here to wind surf, mountain bike, hike, sail… You name it. And if you are one of those types and you bring a lot of sporting gear the hotel has perfect storage facilities for that. Or if you are here to do nothing. That works just as well.

Welcome to La Scuola!

Welcome to Goti Hotel where the outside has received a gentle makeover.

The design of Goti is pared down with muted colors and clean lines. A very straight forward kind of interior with very few frills.

The courtyard where kids used to play is now a shady terrace where you can, if you are lucky have breakfast under the linden trees.

Our room had the same kind of no nonsense design. Loved to have the windows open to feel the gentle breeze coming in from the lake.

So good to see that Goti is doing what more and more hotels are doing with their in-room products, to skip the small bottles and going for refillable ones.

How beautiful!? Love these old buildings with a colorful past. This one used to be the local community school up until the 1970:s.

The view from the sun lounger on our terrace,. Plants to shield us from our neighbors and some mighty mountains as the backdrop.

Our room was called “Maestra”, the teacher’s room.

The carpeted stairs help to create a subtle, quiet atmosphere.

M is getting ready for breakfast. Gotta love an Italian breakfast. The sweet outweigh the savory 5 to 1.

Soft linen sheets, a view of the valley and a cool breeze coming through the open windows was a perfect receipt for a good nights sleep. And to wake up to the scent of freshly baked goods…

I love this open library next to the reception where you can swop your book for another one. A good way to be more circular when it comes to your holiday literature.

A bathroom in the middle of the room? Why not!?

The reason to come here. The beautiful Lake Garda, where the northern part looks more like a Norwegian fjord than an Italian lake.

This little guide has all the info you might need and then some. And if it isn’t enough, Valeria who runs the place knows the rest.

The sun is setting on Lake Garda.

One of the old classrooms is now the breakfast room/lounge area.

A thunderstorm is putting a pause on the Summer fun for a moment.

You’ll find small reminders everywhere to the past of the building.

M enjoying the best moment of the day, a fresh morning swim in the crystal clear waters.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are a sporty type looking for a great place to rest between your different activities or if you come to Lake Garda for R&R. This place fits both types. Great location in Torbole, close to the mountains and the lake.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the breakfast. I am usually a savory kind of guy but when I go to Italy I go fully local and turn into a sweet lover. The saying ”When in Rome…” exists for a reason. And coffee. Lots of it. Another thing I really like is the price. Many hotels in this area charge a fortune for bland, generic, downright boring hotel rooms. But here you get a lot for your Euros.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to get up early in the morning and head down to the lake for a morning swim. The lake is always (more or less) totally calm in the morning. It is a magical feeling to break the surface and let your body wake up to that fresh (ok, chilly) mountain lake water.
