Hipster hotel with quirky design and relaxed vibe in Vienna
Hotel Daniel / Vienna / Austria
Vienna… Home of Sacher cake, classic cafés frequented by intellectuals like Freud, magnificent Belle Époque buildings, stunning castles and the Danube. For some time this grand old European capital started to feel a little… I don’t know… outdated. Most of the reasons why people decided to come here had a connection to the past. But recently there has been a shift. Slowly Vienna has decided that you can not only rely on a rich history. Cool shops, bars, museums, creative design studios and everything that comes with it has started to pop up around the city. And luckily also some really great, interesting hotels. Like this one, the Daniel.
Hotel Daniel is located in the outskirts of downtown Vienna, a short 15 min walk from the centre. The people behind the Daniel opened their first hotel in Graz, in the southern part of Austria back in 2005 and in 2011 they opened their second property in Vienna. Fun fact is that this building from 1962 was created by the same architect as its sister property in Graz, Georg Lippert.
I love this boxy, architecture. Especially when the strict outside is combined with a colorful, vibrant, eclectic interior. Like the restaurant that is overflowing with old-fashioned lamps, just like the ones you used to find at your grandmas house (and these days in the homes of hipsters everywhere). They call the design concept ”Smart Luxury”. This means a hotel that offers an open, flexible lifestyle with zero restrictions on us guests. Other than this is a place where you come to relax and enjoy.
All in all there are 116 rooms at the Daniel. The style of our room felt a bit industrial that was combined with warmer elements like wood in order to create a warmer, more homey feeling.
The first thing that catches your eye when approaching the hotel is a stranded sailing boat hanging over the edge of the roof. This piece of art by Erwin Wurm is called Misconceivable and it adds a certain edge (pun intended) to the look of the hotel. A perfect way to mess up the strict design.

This place is perfect if you…
…are looking for a young, fun place to stay at when you visit Vienna. There are plenty of classy, highbrow hotels with doormen, heavy velvet curtains and brass details. If you want to stay at a hotel where you will mix with colorful locals swinging by for the famous brunch, this is your place.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the relaxed vibe. And the fresh bread baked in-house.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…is to bring comfy shoes. Vienna is town made for walking. And there are plenty of watering holes to recharge.
