Friends of RG: Fredrik

Fredrik came into my life when he starting dating my “sister from another mister”, Fanny. When I heard about how they had switched clothes with each other during the party where they met in order to start some rumors among the other guests, I knew Fredrik was a keeper. And just for the record, he rocked Fanny’s green, glittery Beyoncé-inspired dress. Today this Gothenburg native lives with his family in the Paris of the east, Shanghai where he is trying to squeeze in as many golf rounds and gourmet dinners as possible, as he explores life in and around China. And just like me, he is a hotel fanatic.

What hotel were you staying at when you first realised that you were a hotel-fanatic?

The first time I realized I loved hotel was probably the first time I stayed at a hotel. I think I was around 6 years old. Me and my two older brothers got our own room and I remember that I thought that the pool and the breakfast was amazing. The hotel was Marienlyst Strand Hotel in Helsingør, Denmark.

What kind of hotels do you usually go for?

If I needed to choose a hotel category I think it would be boutique hotels. They have something unique to offer and I want to have the feeling of “this I haven’t seen before” when I enter and also check out from a new hotel.

What has been your most memorable hotel stay thus far? And why?

My favorite hotel so far is a really tough question for me to answer, but one of my favorites is Wilson Island in Queensland Australia. The rooms are simple tents and you share all meals at a communal table as well as the actual island with only 7 other guest. And the setting is beautiful, being surrounded by the most amazing is the nature. The barrier reefs just off the island makes for fantastic, mind-provoking snorkeling.

3 of your musts when staying at a hotel?

3 things that I really want to have are, good service, good breakfast and also an architectural mindset, a kind of red thread connecting the inside with the outside.

If you have stayed at any (or several) of the hotels featured on SbRG, which one is your favourite?

The first hotel that comes to mind is Nääs Fabriker since we had our wedding party there. I love how they have kept the old architecture and gently added new features. I also like Hotel Havana which was super cozy and homey as well as W Amsterdam and Dorsia. But if I had to chose only one it has to be (maybe a little unexpected) 1898 The Post in Ghent. Spacious rooms, a lux look and feel as well as great location in this cute little Belgian town.

This is the hotel out of all the hotels of the Selected by RG list that Fredrik likes the most.

Which of the featured hotels on Selected by RG are on the top of your wish list to stay at?

When you can choose from over 200 fantastic hotels, it’s of course very hard to pick just one favorite but Ett Hem the only hotel with 2 SbRG reviews sounds amazing (the second post is here). Another one that I am really keen to stay at is in a country that I really want to visit and that’s Iceland. I would love to stay at ION Adventure Hotel. To experience the weather changes that you did during your stay must have been amazing.

This is the hotel Fredrik is dreaming of staying at.

Are there any hotels you think should be featured on Selected by RG in the future?

It’s of course hard to suggest any hotels for RG to visit. I think you have all the hotspots on your radar. But TwentySeven in Amsterdam was really nice. Hotel Puerto America in Madrid is also fantastic. The only problem when staying there is to choose which floor to stay on.
