Colorful, rich boutique hotel with a French feel in Swedish Gothenburg

Hotel Dorsia / Göteborg / Sweden

Hotel Dorsia in Gothenburg, Sweden is unique in so many ways. It is actually difficult top pin down what kind of hotel this is. It is located in the centre of Gothenburg but it isn’t your typical urban hotel. It has a really great, unique design but at the same time it would be limiting to only call this a design hotel since it is so much more. I guess the best way to describe this hotel is that it is Dorsia.

One of the many things that are unique with Dorsia is that this is an independent hotel. It is owned by Thomas Petersen who’s family has been important players on the local hospitality scene for three generations. And this hotel was created with focus on quality so a lot of time, energy (and money) was invested to create this place. And it shows. This is a passion project in the true sense of the word.

And then we have the design. To say it is unique is an understatement. Both the common areas and the 37 rooms make a statement. A bold, colorful and confident statement. It feels like being transported back to ”La Belle Époque”. We are talking color- and pattern explosion. You will be showered in purple, burgundy, turquoise, yellow and green. And this is all paired with expressive art, statues, busts and heavy velvet drapes to create that cosy, Parisian feeling of the late 19th century.

I also feel the need to mention the restaurant that is beyond. It is difficult finding a better place to eat in Gothenburg. And something I want to highlight just because it is pretty rare is that hotel guests are always prioritized in the restaurant which is not usually the case with hotels with high profile restaurants. Smart move!

You’ve gotta love a hotel with a giant birds nest above the entrance.

The opulent, maximalistic lobby of Dorsia sets the tone.

The colorful design of the hotel’s common areas, continue in the rooms. Somehow these colors should clash but they don’t. Love this!

Never seen nor tried products from Christian Lacroix before. I like hotels that use refillable bottles instead of all the small disposable bottles.

If you want to do some kind of excursion from Dorsia I can recommend taking the tram to Saltholmen and jump on a boat to one of the islands in the south archipelago. Here I am exploring the sunny island of Styrsö.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are tired of generic, run of the mill Scandi chic hotels with discreet design. This hotel is in your face with its unique mix of colors and design.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the surprise when you enter for the first time. Hotel Dorsia is located on a quite side street in downtown Gothenburg and you would never be able to guess what is waiting for you behind the entrance. Ok, maybe the huge birds nest above the entrance could be seen as some kind of sign…

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to eat! Many hotel restaurants are ok to skip eating at. This is not one of those. And if you venture out to explore Gothenburg, make sure to head over to Magasinsgatan where you find plenty of great shops, cafés and restaurants.
