Bauhaus inspired Alp hotel with a family feel and stunning views

Briol / Barbiano / Italy

Sometimes you have to make an extra effort to get to the really great hotels. To get to Briol you exit the Autostrada at the base of the valley and start to drive uphill to the small village of Barbiano. Then you continue a little further until you reach the Briol parking lot. From there you can either travel with a 4WD taxi or hike up to 1310 meters above sea level where you’ll find this amazing, unique hotel.

Briol is located on a green alpine pasture surrounded by larch trees. The architecture is classic Bauhaus, which makes the building fit so well into the surroundings. Most of the furniture has been around since the beginning of the 20th Century but somehow it feels very contemporary. Briol has been in the hands of the Fink family for generations. At the moment it is Johanna Fink who is the woman in charge and she is fully involved in the running of the hotel. It was her grandmother Johanna Settari who was the founder of Briol Hotel and she was the one that decided that the hotel could never be sold to anyone outside the family.

When we first stayed here there were only a few rooms, situated in the main building. Over the years additional buildings have been incorporated in the hotel so today there is a total of 5 different buildings which gives more people the opportunity to stay at this amazing place.

Briol has so much going for it. The Bauhaus building and the location are two of the main features and USPs.

A solid structure. It is impressive how modern the building and the interior feels although it is more than 100 years old.

Briol is just as great in all kinds of weather. Actually it is even more cosy with the rain hammering on the windows.

At Briol they always dry the bed linen and towels which makes them smell fresher than fresh. And it adds to the relaxed feeling of the hotel. Like you are staying with friends.

This place is perfect if you…

…want to experience a unique hotel that is far away from the beaten track. It is a place where you can enjoy fresh air, amazing views, good food and total tranquillity.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is that it takes an effort to get here. That you can’t just pull the handbrake outside the hotel entrance. It makes the whole experience even better. And I also have to mention the view of the Dolomites on the opposite side of the valley. Crazy beautiful!

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to hike. It is a must when staying here and the best way to build up an appetite so you arrive to dinner with a healthy, massive appetite.
