Design hotel with urban flair in St. Anton in the Austrian Alps
Ullr House / St Anton / Austria
The Austrian Alps is a place I hold very dear. And one of my favorite villages in this remarkable area is St Anton am Arlberg. Located in the western part of Austria, in the region of Tirol. St Anton is one of those classic resorts where people have been coming for ages to either ski or hike. And in the Summer of 2021 a new hotel has just opened its doors. The hotel is called Ullr House.
The people behind the Ullr House are Franziska and Michael, a local couple. And to create this Alpine design masterpiece they brought on Munich based architect Stephanie Thatenhorst. She brought in an urban feel and merged it with alpine traditions. The result is stunning! Wood is used throughout the hotel and is challenged (or paired, depending on how you view it) with fine concrete, flower patterns and green tiles. But of course you also have the typical muted, earthy tones that are part of the tradition in this neck of the woods.
I have often wondered about why I love Alpine design so much. Maybe it has to do with that it feels like a close relative to the Scandi design that I grew up with. Both style traditions feel timeless and tactile where natural material (mainly different kinds of wood, most of the time blond) always play the leading role.
Ok, back to Ullr House. All in all there are 40 spacious rooms in the hotel, a great restaurant and a spa. The spa is cleverly hidden below street level so it feels like you are cocooning when you are down there enjoying the pool and the 3 different saunas. It was easy to disconnect and relax when the outside world was out of sight.

This place is perfect if you…
…would like to have an elevated Alpine experience. If you when you go on a skiing-/hiking holiday want to stay at a hotel with excellent design and great service. Then this is your place!
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the people who work here. I could easily list a number of things that are amazing such as the design, the spa, the food, the bed… But the most lasting memory after our stay was the people. They have managed to get a great group of people together and they really made our stay.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…the breakfast. If you were planning to sleep in and skip breakfast for some strange reason - don’t! It is out of this world!
