Modern, industrial looking hotel in the old harbor of Malmö

Story Hotel / Malmö / Sweden

Malmö in the south of Sweden has evolved from an industrial harbor city into a creative hot spot that is attracting creatives from all of Scandinavia to move here. This has resulted in what I am sure must be the most hipster dense city per capita in the Nordics.

Story Hotel is located in what used to be the old harbor (where you took the boat over to Copenhagen before the bridge was built), which is now an modern mix of office- and residential buildings, seamlessly incorporated into downtown Malmö. This is, according to me, one of the few successful city developments where there is actually life and energy all through the day, and not just a place where people either work or live.

Story Hotel is situated on floors 10-13 of this 14 story building. The black bricks somehow gives it an austere and powerful look, rising above the surrounding buildings. The other floors are occupied by several different businesses, creative studios, a yoga studio, restaurants and meeting facilities..

The design I would describe as modern industrial. Gentle tones of blush and blue are used to soften the industrial elements to make sure the end result isn’t too hard or rough like some industrial design can be. But with this said, you still get your polished concrete ceilings, metal, exposed pipes and large windows that are perfect to watch the sunset from. Make sure you ask for a room facing the Öresund to get the best view in the house.

The Story Hotel is right by the water in the old harbor of Malmö.

The colorful logo complements the otherwise fairly strict exterior.

The reception area is an open, spacious area, shared not only by people staying at the hotel but all the different businesses that are based here. Creates a busy, buzzing feeling.

A lot of places to hang out, not only for us hotel guests but also for all the people working and meeting here.

On the way to my room. The corridors are dark with exposed pipes to give it an industrial look.

I really like how the industrial design is softened by the use of warm colors, like here in my room.

A room with a view. This red velvet chair was the best place to sit and watch the sunset over the Öresund.

Another splash of color to brighten the look of the room.

The bathroom had a contemporary feel with led mirror and terrazzo features. An extra plus for having refillable bottles of in-room products from local Swedish brand L:a Bruket.

Malmö has some really cozy areas, like this one. This is the Old West with low slung houses in different colors. In this architecture it is easy to see the Danish heritage come alive in Malmö.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…want to stay in a central yet calm location. The station where the trains from Copenhagen and the airport rolls in, is just a couple of hundred meters away as are and the central parts of town.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is Kasai in the sky, the in-house restaurant located on the top floor. They serve Japanese inspired food with a Swedish touch. And this is not the only thing they serve, they also have uninterrupted views of Öresund, the bridge and on a clear day you can see Denmark.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to explore Malmö by foot. My favorite part is Gamla Väster (the Old West). It is an old working class area with low slung buildings in different vivid colors, cafés and some great shops. Perfect place for a stroll and some people watching. And a Swedish “fika”.
