Time to close and evaluate 2022
Selected by RG Awards 2022
Going into 2022 I was (like most) hoping for a much better year compared to the annus horribilis that we know as 2021. Already in Feb it was made clear that 2022 would be another one of those crap years. But when it comes to hotel experiences, 2022 actually was a good year. Maybe it was a direct consequence of the madness in the world, I felt an extra strong need to escape, because when I started to go through the list of hotels I have stayed at this year there are some real gems on it.
Which one of all of these hotels will earn a coveted Selected by RG Award? This is the third time since I started this blog that I look back at the year that has just come to an end and highlight my favorite hotels among the ones I have stayed at.
I will present a front runner in ten different categories:
Alpine hotel
Rural hotel
Hotel by water
Historic hotel
Urban hotel
Bed & Breakfast
Budget hotel
Gastro hotel
Sustainability focused hotel
Unique award
My favorite alpine hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: Hirschen, Austria
A hotel that looks like it comes straight out of Hans and Gretl storybook. A beautiful example of when local traditions are kept alive while at the same time incorporating contemporary details to make sure the final look doesn’t feel dated. This hotel could also have been the front runner in the Gastro Hotel category since the food here is so delicious.

My favorite rural hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: Trakt Forest Hotel, Sweden
Well off the beaten track, in rural Småland, Sweden there is a truly unique hotel consisting of 5 modern tree houses built on stilts. This place is all about tranquillity and enjoying the natural surroundings. It is just you, the trees and an intense silence.

My favorite hotel by water of 2022…
…and the winner is: Tuba Club, France
This hotel is like a wet (pun intended) Riviera dream. It is located right by the crystal clear Mediterranean so it is a perfect place for lazy days in the sun. And on top of this the hotel has that kind of laid back vibe that only the French fully master. It is like nothing is planned but still everything ends up with perfection. A French kind of relaxed perfection.

My favorite historic hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: The Pig at Combe, Great Britain
This hotel is located among the rolling, green hills of Devon. It is an old manor house that has been brought into the 21st century with a fun, eclectic design without erasing any of the rich heritage. This is a true destination hotel where you will treated like a lord or lady, whatever you fancy.

My favorite urban hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: Concepció, Spain
Palma, Mallorca has turned into a perfect destination for a city break. It is perfect size and has a lot to offer in terms of restaurants, shopping and night life. And this urban hotel is a perfect place to stay when visiting and is my favorite urban hotel of 2022. Small, beautifully designed, great service and great location on a quiet side street.

My favorite B&B of 2022…
…and the winner is: Glebe House, Great Britain
None can do B&Bs quite like the British so this year it was difficult to top the experience I had when staying at Glebe House. It is colorful, unique little place in southwest England where the welcome is as warm as the colors used in the design.

My favorite gastro hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: Villa La Madonna, Italy
There is no point writing anything clever about the food in Italy. This hotel knows how to elevate the food experience to the next level and that is why it is my favorite gastro hotel of 2022.

My favorite budget design hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: Les Deux Gares, France
I am always on the look out for hotels with unique, beautiful design at a decent price but they are hard to come by, especially when in popular tourist destinations like Paris. But this hotel is an exception and that is why it is my favorite budget design hotel of 2022.

My favorite sustainability focused hotel of 2022…
…and the winner is: 48º Nord, France
It makes my hotel heart very happy to see more and more hotels taking sustainability seriously. And a hotel that is a true front runner when it comes to circularity and doing the utmost to minimize the carbon footprint is this one, 48 Nord. An architectural masterpiece sitting on a lush hill in the region of Alsace.

And the final one, the Unique Award of 2022…
…and the winner is: Juvet Landscape Hotel, Norway
This category is in a way a combination of all the other categories. Some hotels are just too unique to fit into only one category. And my favorite in this category of categories this year is Juvet Landscape Hotel. It is a truly unique place where nature and architecture comes together in what can only be described as magic.
