Family-run boutique hotel in Venice with a warm, homely touch

Novecento Boutique Hotel / Venice / Italy

This is a real family affair. Diana and Alessandro Romanelli opened Hotel Flora together with their sun Ruggero (love that name, by the way) back in the 60s. In 2002 Diana and Alessandro’s grandson, Gioele and his wife Heiby decided to take things to the next level by opening a second hotel, Novecento. They are such a lovely couple and they bring such good energy into this hotel.

Hotel Novecento is located on quiet Calle del Dose on a corner just off Campo San Maurizio, a short walk from the hustle of St Mark’s Square. This 9-key hotel has an air of the Far East. They call the style of the hotel ethnic-chic. There is something in the rich use of textiles and the rich use of colors which results in a warm, snug hotel with such a relaxed atmosphere.

My room was a spacious one with soft yellow walls and windows facing the courtyard. It was filled with vintage furniture, (what I assume was an) Murano chandelier and terrazzo floors. When visiting a popular city like Venice it feels extra good to stay at a calm, quiet hotel that you can retreat back to after having hung out with all the other visitors and recharge before heading back out again.

The only way to arrive to Venice is by boat. The boat from the airport takes you right down the Canal Grande to the final stop which is a short walk from the hotel.

Welcome to Novecento Hotel. Located on Calle del Dose, just off Campo San Maurizio.

The reception is dark and cozy with this amazing marble floor.

Next to the reception there is a cozy lounge to hang out in.

In the back of the hotel there is a lovely little courtyard.

Heading up to my room. I must say that I am a fan of the animal printed carpet instead of just having some generic one.

My room. Warm and elegant.

Heavy printed drapes, terrazzo floors and vintage furniture makes for a fun design.

The Romanellis wishing me a great stay at their hotel.

We are in Venice after all so it makes full sense that there was a ornate Murano (I think) glass chandelier in my room.

The yellow toned walls and the vintage furniture fit so well together.

Bath room products from Italian brand Ortigia made the whole bathroom (and me) smell really good.

Love these old wooden ceilings. So much character and heritage.

Upstairs on the top floor there is a common room, perfect place to hang out after you are done exploring Venice…

…but how can you ever be done with that? Venice just makes me want to continue to explore.

I stumbled on a really great café/bar called Farini when I was strolling around town. Great coffee!

If Venice is beautiful during daytime it is even more stunning during night. And so far less crowded.

St Mark’s Basilica is an impressive building.

Back to the hotel to crawl into bed and dream about a new day in Venice.

Breakfast at Novecento is a delicious affair. And of course the coffee is top notch.

Leaving Venice the same way I arrived - by boat.

This place is perfect if you…

…like me love staying at small boutique hotel where the family who owns it is fully involved in running it and they are also interacting with us customers.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the cute courtyard. A lovely green terrace, perfect to escape the crowds and relax in the shade.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to get lost. This is one of my favorite things to do when in Venice, to just walk around aimlessly to see where I end up. It is such a joy to cross a number of random bridges, follow some narrow alleyway that opens up to a sunny square where the locals are hanging out chatting about yesterday’s football results, politics or just sharing some local gossip.
