Eclectic lakeside manor with quirky interior and relaxed vibe in south Austria

Villa Verdin / Millstatt / Kärnten / Austria

If you like traditional Austrian design or if you are generally a fan of minimalism, continue scrolling because Villa Verdin is not for you. This old villa (to me it is more like a small castle), located right on the scenic Lake Millstatt in southern part of Austria is an eclectic fantasy. This place is more about saying yes than no and it shows in the design. It is an abundance of prints and colors. A mix of vintage furniture, random souvenirs and fun little accessories most likely sourced from different yard sales. Old and new, sometimes clashing and sometimes harmonizing. Basically, it is the definition of eclecticism.

The location is right by a beautiful alpine lake so it is a perfect hotel for lazy Summer days, lounging in the garden between dips in the crystal clear water. The rooms are pretty simple but who needs over-designed rooms when you have the most beautiful view right outside your window. If you are lucky enough to have a room facing the lake, that is. Which we were.

It almost feels like you are part of a Grimm Brothers fairytale when you approach Villa Verdin.

Welcome to Villa Verdin! It almost feels like you are part of some Grimm Brother’s fairytale when you approach the hotel.

The first thing you see when you enter is this grand staircase.

Checking in at the bar. My kind of check in.

Everywhere you turn you see these amazing pieces of furniture. This massive cupboard was placed right outside the bathrooms.

Heading upstairs to our room.

The majestic hallway with a massive tinted windows, almost like a church.

This cozy corner is on the first floor landing. Perfect to take a rest if your luggage is just too darn heavy.

A doe coat hanger anyone?

M waving from our second floor window.

M is waving from our second floor window. And the view from there?

The scenic Lake Millstatt from our hotel room window.

This is the view. The scenic Lake Millstatt from our hotel room window.

My favorite area to hang out is the indoor veranda.

I love the mix of vintage furniture. Different styles, eras and textures.

This is my favorite photo from our stay at Villa Verdin. I just think it sums up the place. The mix, the colors, the madness, the beauty.

I love myself a window framed by greenery. It is like the most beautiful frame.

Me going down to the lake for a swim.

Early morning, the sun is already up and I’m going down to the lake for a swim.

M starting the day with a refreshing dip.

M was faster than me into the water. Always the best start to any day to have a refreshing dip.

The Villa Verdin beach café. Perfect place to relax in the afternoon sun.

The Villa Verdin beach café. Perfect place to relax in the afternoon sun.

And if you look underneath the terrace, there is a vintage Citroen parked there. Of course there is. Makes total sense when at Villa Verdin.

This place is perfect if you…

…want to go for a lakeside retreat and you appreciate a hotel with a truly relaxing atmosphere and truly eclectic design where you can be yourself. If this sounds like you, book a room at Villa Verdin.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the lakeside location. So great to sneak downstairs in the morning, before anyone else has woken up and go for a dip in the lake. The best start to any day - ever.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to take the hotel row boat for a spin on the lake. The hotel is even prettier when you watch it from the water. And it is also kind of romantic if you like me do it together with your love.
