Friendly South Tyrol B&B where contemporary and historic comes together

Niedermairhof / Brunico / South Tyrol / Italy

Brunico is one of the many cute small towns of South Tyrol, surrounded by dramatic mountains and Niedermaierhof B&B is located right on the outskirts of this town.

When you approach the hotel it really looks like a small castle. The building is more than 700 years old and has been brought into the 21st century with a cubist, modern add on. The extension hangs on to the side of the building like a glass and metal parasite.

The B&B is run by Kathrin Mair who grew up right here when her dad was running the property as a farm. When she took over the reign she started the process of turning the farm into an affable B&B. The interior is beautifully executed with rustic and modern elements. Everywhere you turn the old is always combined with something contemporary. A modern, sleek vanity is standing on top of an old chest of drawers. A heavy, traditional cupboard is standing next to sleek, Danish furniture from Skagerrak. This mix is always something that gets my design juices flowing.

Since this is a B&B there is no restaurant on site, but don’t worry. There are plenty of great places to eat downtown Brunico which is just a short walk away. A perfect way to build up an appetite and create space for all of that delicious Italian food.

Welcome to Niedermairhof!

This modern extension is such an interesting add-on to the 700 year old building.

The staircase that takes you up to the reception.

The main floor of the B&B.

Our bright and cozy room. I’m a huge fan of the textile head board with the modern version of a traditional pattern.

Some modern Danish furniture next to a traditional, local cupboard.

Everywhere, even on the bathroom, traditional is combined with modern.

M is checking out the lounge on the top floor. A light space to hang out and relax in.

This chair was my favorite spot, with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and snow covered meadows.

The lounge is bathing in light from the skylights.

The breakfast area is tucked away in a corner of the main floor. Love the herringbone wooden floors and the old masonry heater with the ornate tiles.

I love this entrance to the spa where they have taken old farm tools and created an arty display, connecting the present with the past.

Downtown Brunico is a short walk from the hotel and has a cute little walking street, perfect for an afternoon stroll after skiing.

Skiing in the Dolomites is surreal. The white snow against the dramatic mountain tops is almost too much to take in.

We met up with our friends, the Westlund family and went skiing together. They also brought their cute dog, Teddy to join in on the fun. We were stopped over and over again by people wanting to take photos and say hi to Teddy.
