Dutch small town hotel with high design ambitions
Hotel Modez / Arnhem / Netherlands
One of my favorite things when it comes to hotels, is when I discover hotels off the beaten track. Hotels located in a town or an area where most tourist never go. Like this one, Hotel Modez in the Dutch city of Arnhem. A town which was the scene for one of the most important battles during the Second World War and therefore took a big blow. Arnhem has been rebuilt and become something of a Fashion capital of this small country. With this said, it is a very logical step that Hotel Modez is inspired by fashion and design.
The concept of the hotel is created by Dutch design studio, Studio Piet Paris. They decided to invite 30 different Dutch fashion designers, where most have a local connection to Arnhem, and gave them the chance to design the rooms. The brief was to create surprising concepts and to make sure their own charcteristic style shone through.
Hotel Modez is located in the Modekwartier, the fashion and design district of Arnhem. This is an area full of shops, creative hubs, art studios as well as restaurants, bars and cafes.
All in all there are 20 rooms at Hotel Modez. You can’t chose a specific room when you book so it is a surprise to see which one you will end up sleeping in. We stayed in the room called Humanoid, a room designed with natural materials and colors to evoke a feeling of freedom and nature.

This place is perfect if you…
…want to experience something different. When visiting The Netherlands it is easy to end up in the classic trio, Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague. Hidden gem Arnhem has a lot to offer especially if you are a fan of the creative scene. And if you come here there is only one hotel worth staying at (in my view) and that is Modez.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is that they have given the designers freedom to create something truly unique. I wish more hotels dared to go all the way when it comes to interior design and not play it too safe. It really leaves a lasting impression.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…to explore all the small shops and creative studios in the area surrounding the hotel. And when you are done with this, go to the nearby Hoge Veluwe park. The largest national park of The Netherlands with stunning nature and renowned art museum the Kröller-Müller.
