Bold design hotel all dressed in copper in the heart of the Tyrol

Mari Pop / Zillertal / Austria

This design hotel is located in Ried in Zillertal, Austria. There used to be one of those classic Austrian guest houses on this site, built in 1971 called Grillhof. It was run by Elfriede and Herbert Rist all the way up to 2017 when they handed the responsibility  over to the next generation, to Silvia Gschösser and Markus Rist.

Before this modern beauty was built they decide to open a pop down hotel, a combo of art project and temporary hotel. They wanted to capture this experience when they started the creation of their design hotel therfore, art plays a big part of the design at the Mari Pop Hotel

The hotel is created by architect Bernhard Stoehr. I love how he has gone all bold with the exterior dressed in copper cladding around the pine-framed windows, glass balcony railings and with black-stained pinewood wrapping. Feels like the ultimate way to take traditional material and incorporating them in a way so it feels modern and so appealing.

All in all there are 45 rooms divided into the main building and the guest house. Like in most other Alpine hotels, wood plays a huge part in the interior. In the rooms exposed pine plays centre stage and creates a perfect frame for the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favorite designs is how the headboard of the bed continues up along the wall and becomes the ceiling. And the dash of pink used in our room felt like a great way to make sure that the boldness of the exterior is also on the inside.

The exterior of Mari Pop looks so great. I love the combo of copper and wood.

The rest of the building is dressed in black-stained pine. Works so well with the copper.

The brown loden headboard is framed by a pine wall that continues up and becomes the ceiling of the room.

From the bed there was beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The area around the window was painted in a pale pink. Stunning!

The corridor outside our room had a very unique mustard-yellow almost golden tone.

There is art placed in all corners of the hotel and I also like how the pale pine is disrupted by patterned floor tiles.

At the back of the hotel is where you’ll find the pool area. There are a lot of cool design features like the steel staircase that stands out against the black and copper.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…like to experience when traditional Alpine is perfectly combined with bold contemporary design without losing the local connection.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the sauna on the top floor. So many times saunas or spas are located in the basement but there is something so great when it is placed high up and you have a view while you are relaxing in the warm sauna.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to go for a hike (if you are here during the warmer months). Zillertal is a stunning area with endless hiking opportunities.
