Family run Alpine hotel mixing old and new in south Germany
Alpenhotel Krone / Pfronten / Bavaria / Germany
An area that has always had a special place in my heart is the Alps. I remember the first time I got to experience the majestic mountains and the cute villages. I was 7 years old road tripping with my family, heading for Italy. Ever since, I have come back again and again and again…
Something I started to appreciate as an adult is the typical Alpine style of hotels. There is something about the combination of a strong heritage that marries so well with a modern, minimalist that these hotels do so well. Maybe it is because it is a style that is close to that kind of Scandi chic look that I have grown up with. Ok, a detour… Anyhow, back to Alpenhotel Krone.
Alpenhotel Krone dates back to the early 19th Century and is located in Pfronten, a small village in the mountainous region of Allgau, right on the Austrian border. The hotel is a typical Alpine hotel where it is all about ”gemütlichkeit” and solid, German hospitality.
The hotel has 32 rooms in total and the design is atypical for this part of the world. And what does this mean? It means a lot of blonde wood, wool and other tactile features. It means that there is something very pure and simple about the whole aesthetic. Nothing frilly or fancy. It is functional design that is really beautiful in its simplistic glory.

This place is perfect if you…
…are looking for a place with plenty to offer. The Allgau region has that in spades. The nature surrounding Alpenhotel Krone is amazing to say the least. If you want to experience all of this and still stay at a boutique hotel with personal service that takes design seriously. Then this is your place!
My favorite thing about this place…
…is their restaurant called Kronenstube serves the best Wienerschnitzel ever! To sit outside after a day of hiking in the mountains, followed by a sauna, with a cold beer and a real schnitzel. Not much that beats that.
What not to miss when staying here…
…it is almost mandatory to visit the surreal Neuschwanstein Castle when coming to this area. This fairytale castle (which allegedly was the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle) was built for the Ludwig II of Bavaria and is located a short car ride from the hotel.
