Family run Alpine hotel mixing old and new in south Germany

Alpenhotel Krone / Pfronten / Bavaria / Germany

An area that has always had a special place in my heart is the Alps. I remember the first time I got to experience the majestic mountains and the cute villages. I was 7 years old road tripping with my family, heading for Italy. Ever since, I have come back again and again and again…

Something I started to appreciate as an adult is the typical Alpine style of hotels. There is something about the combination of a strong heritage that marries so well with a modern, minimalist that these hotels do so well. Maybe it is because it is a style that is close to that kind of Scandi chic look that I have grown up with. Ok, a detour… Anyhow, back to Alpenhotel Krone.

Alpenhotel Krone dates back to the early 19th Century and is located in Pfronten, a small village in the mountainous region of Allgau, right on the Austrian border. The hotel is a typical Alpine hotel where it is all about ”gemütlichkeit” and solid, German hospitality.

The hotel has 32 rooms in total and the design is atypical for this part of the world. And what does this mean? It means a lot of blonde wood, wool and other tactile features. It means that there is something very pure and simple about the whole aesthetic. Nothing frilly or fancy. It is functional design that is really beautiful in its simplistic glory.

Welcome to Hotel Krone! We have just checked in and I am about to collect all of our luggage.

I love the tradition of embellishing the facades that is popular on these kind of old buildings in the Alps.

The lobby. A great idea to bring in some prints to contrast to the otherwise neutral color tones.

I am always a big fan when it comes to having real plants in a hotel.

The beds in this part of the world are in a league of their own. And the beds at Alpenhotel Krone did not disappoint. We slept like babies. Maybe it also had something to do with all the activities, the heavy food and the pure air.

The best part of the hotel is the spa. I really like this dark corridor leading up to…

…this space. Spacious and bright, with a view of the garden and the mountains in the background.

The spa area has the same design aesthetic as the rest of the hotel. Clean lines and a sense of pure simplicity.

Sauna time!

This old heaters are so typical for this part of the world. Love them!

Not all the food served here is rich and heavy. The also offer lighter cuisine like the bowl you see in the photo.

This little guy kept us company during one of our lunches.

Downstairs there is a game room where you can play Fussball, pool or just hang out.

Me trying to read up on all that the Allgau Region has to offer while waiting for dinner.

If the weather permits it is great to sit outside. Here I am trying to read up on all the Allgäu Region has to offer while waiting for dinner.

Mountains and water… A magical combo.

If you are looking for something active to do in order to burn some of that heavy (and delicious) Bavarian food, I can recommend doing some SUP on the nearby Forggensee.

The almost surreal Castel Neuschwanstein is well worth a visit.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are looking for a place with plenty to offer. The Allgau region has that in spades. The nature surrounding Alpenhotel Krone is amazing to say the least. If you want to experience all of this and still stay at a boutique hotel with personal service that takes design seriously. Then this is your place!

My favorite thing about this place…

…is their restaurant called Kronenstube serves the best Wienerschnitzel ever! To sit outside after a day of hiking in the mountains, followed by a sauna, with a cold beer and a real schnitzel. Not much that beats that.

What not to miss when staying here…

…it is almost mandatory to visit the surreal Neuschwanstein Castle when coming to this area. This fairytale castle (which allegedly was the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle) was built for the Ludwig II of Bavaria and is located a short car ride from the hotel.
