Central boutique hotel in The Hague with retro vibe

The Collector Hotel / The Hague / The Netherlands

The Dutch third city, The Hague is more or less always (ok, not always but very often) overlooked when tourists come to The Netherlands. The majority end up in Amsterdam and in recent years more and more people are discovering the second city, Rotterdam. But very few find their way to The Hague which is a pity since this city has so much to offer. Like this cool, urban hotel, the Collector.

The Collector is located downtown, on the Haagsche Bluf, a courtyard right in the main shopping district. The name of the hotel comes from the all the different collections that are displayed throughout the hotel. We are talking everything from vintage front desk bells to cassette tapes and old model shirt collars. Totally random but at the same time totally intriguing. And unique!

There are a total of 57 rooms so a fairly small city hotel. The rooms on the other hand is everything but small. Our room was large and airy with the most comfy bed and fancy marble bathroom. Of course there are also part of the collection on display in the room. Our headboard was an eclectic piece of art made of buttons, cassette tapes and vinyl records. Just check one of the photos below.

The Collector is located in the most central of locations so you have the city at your doorstep, ready to be discovered. And the best way to do it? From the saddle of course, The hotel has some great bikes to rent and the beach is just a short ride away.

The Collector is situated in a courtyard in the centre of The Hague

The old post office of Ghent is an impressive building in all of its Neo Gothical glory. A perfect canvas to start with when creating a hotel concept that resulted in 1898 The Post Hotel.

As one might understand when hearing the name of the hotel is that there are collections of all sorts of things displayed around the hotel. Like these vintage bells at the reception.

We entered through the back door and were totally in awe of this beautiful staircase leading us up to the reception.

Our room had a kind of retro look with a fun, intentionally messy back drop behind the bed.

This headboard is everything. When you look closer you’ll see that it is mostly buttons, tapes and vinyl records.

The corridors have a warm and welcoming feeling. Classy and classic.

I love all things yellow.

Our room had a mezzanine that provided a great birds-eye view of our room with the massive windows and dark green walls.

A smart looking bathroom. Marble and brass works every single time.

There are a lot of fun, retro looking features in all corners of the hotel.

How great is this sofa!? It is hidden in a cozy corner behind the restaurant and it was just as comfy as it looks.

To make a feature wall of old cassette tapes is such a brilliant idea.

The exterior of the hotel is an interesting combo of old and modern. Parts of the old building that was here before have been preserved and combined with a sleek, polished new-build.

Like always when staying at a hotel in The Netherlands there are bikes on loan. It is such a great way to explore the neighborhood. But watch out, not for cars but for other cyclists. The Dutch bike riders are fierce!

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…have done Amsterdam and curious to explore another great Dutch city with a lot to offer. And if you want to stay in the middle of the action is (although the courtyard where the hotel is located is very calm) then this is your place.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the unique theme. Everywhere you look there are collections of the most random things. I have to be honest and say that I don’t fully understand the reason behind the theme, but it doesn’t matter since it makes the hotel look great.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to do your restaurant research. There are som really great places out there but there is little chance you will stumble upon them since many of them are situated in the most unexpected places. Three of my favorites are De Kade on Wagenstraat, N on Nobelstraat and Bartine on Herengracht and if you are looking for a great wine bar there is Bouzy on Dennweg, All of these places are within walking distance from the hotel,
