Fun, vibrant budget hotel in Maastricht with youthful energy
Student Hotel / Maastricht / Netherlands
Even though The Netherlands is a small country there are so many great places to discover. One of my absolute favorite places in this country is Maastricht, located in the southeastern corner of the country, a stones throw from the border to Belgium on one side and Germany on the other side. Basically a very international place where people from the area come to shop, eat and drink. And study. And like in many university towns, affordable accommodation is difficult to find and this is the reason why this hotel is here.
Student Hotel Maastricht is part of a chain of 13 properties in 6 different European countries with 7 in the Netherlands. The first location opened in 2006 and the idea behind this chain is to offer a hybrid of co-working spaces and short- & long term stays for students, business travelers and holiday makers. A great receipt for a vibrant mix of people from all walks of life.
The design of the hotel is modern and fun. The industrial past of the building (which used to me a ceramics factory) is highly visible in the design and this raw look is combined with a lot of color, bold neon signs and contemporary furniture. Our room was discreet and functional, made to look like a classic American dorm room. The big exception were the raw concrete ceilings and the massive factory windows flooding our room with light.
Everything you might ever need during a city weekend, you’ll find within the four walls of the hotel. There is a great restaurant, roof top bar, gym, lounge- & games area, library and there are even laundry facilities if you might need them. Since there are a lot of students living here the energy is very young. For us it was a great opportunity to relive our student days and feel like 20 again.
The Student Hotel is situated in an old ceramics factory, in the vibrant Sphinxkwartier, just a short walk from downtown Maastricht.
Talk about a promising welcome message.
The interior has a strong connection to the factory past with an raw industrial look with a lot of modern features such as statement light fixtures.
Our room was simple and tastefully decorated, modeled after a classic American dorm room. Two exceptions though, raw concrete ceilings and huge factory windows.
The exposed concrete ceiling was combined with colorful walls and some industrial looking furnishings.
Let’s hope not.
I am obsessed with these huge factory windows and equally obsessed with this industrial looking set of lamps.
The lobby is full of separate seating sections where you can sit down to read, study, work or just hang out and meet new people.
A cosy corner in the lobby area. Perfect place to cosy up with a book.
Just opposite the hotel there is a really great art house cinema called Lumière.
M exploring Lumière while waiting for our movie to begin. What I was doing? Getting the popcorn, of course! :-)

My favorite thing about this place…
…is the bold design. It shows that they had a lot of fun when creating the mood board for this hotel. Bright colors, cheeky signs, statement light fixtures and in-your-face design.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…to catch a movie at Lumière. A great art house cinema opposite the hotel in the most beautiful old building, right by a small harbour. Maastricht is a town know for its relaxed vibe and great shopping, so it is easy to have a good time in this international hub.
