Warm design hotel in an old diamond factory in the buzzing De Pijp, Amsterdam

Sir Albert / Amsterdam / Netherlands

In Amsterdam there is an area that has been the favorite among the hipster crowd for many years now. It is called De Pijp and is located in the southern parts of town. It has that perfect mix of the old and new Amsterdam which makes it eclectic, vibrant and exciting.

If you want to stay in this area accommodation alternatives are fairly limited, but don’t you worry. You only need one place and I will share which one it is. It is called Sir Albert and is part of Sir chain with 6 hotels, in Ibiza, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg and two in Amsterdam. What is at the core of this chain is that their hotels are for those who are seeking for authentic experiences in unique locations. Sir Albert was the first hotel to open back in 2013.

Sir Albert is situated in an old diamond factory. I love how the red brick building feels hard and almost a little standoffish on the outside and totally opposite on the inside which is warm and gentle where an open fire place and soft colors welcomes you. This is all thanks to the talented architects and interior concept designers Baranowitz and Kronenburg.

All in all there are 90 rooms in different categories but what connects them are the high ceilings and the huge, old factory windows as well as the uncluttered, contemporary design. I especially liked the use of dusty pink in our room. It set such a soft mood. Around the hotel you’ll find furniture from Dutch design super stars Piet Hein Eek and Joy van Erven which I think it is a great tribute to the modern Dutch design movement.

M looks like he is actually about to walk pass the hotel.

The cosy lobby area or library where you can do your research before you hit the streets of Amsterdam.

The cosy lobby area is the first thing you’ll see when you enter the hotel.

Heading up to our room.

Our room was flooded by light. The design is very paired back and subtle. I especially like the dusty pink half painted walls.

You can probably tell that we slept well in this bed.

Always a plus with hotel that can serve up a good cup of coffee.

This art installation in the lobby area is so fun. At first I thought it was something else and not hippos…

There is a very homey feeling in the Sir Albert with a lot of antique and modern knickknacks placed around the hotel.

A short walk from the hotel you’ll have the Museum Plein where the Amsterdammers come to hang out, picnic, play games and just relax when the weather allows. Oh, and there are also some world class museums that should not be missed if that is your thing.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…want to stay in a different area of Amsterdam, away from where most hotels (and therefore other tourists) are situated. De Pijp is an area where you will have too many restaurant- and bar options to chose from so be warned.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is that it is unfussy which feels very much in line with the Dutch psyche. It is like they don’t take things too seriously which means that there is a relaxed feeling in the hotel. Perfect when you have spent a busy day around town, to come back to a hotel where you can kick back.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to do your restaurant research. There are so many fun places in the area so it is hard to chose. If you are looking for a place with great breakfast in the area, I love Ouef which is right around the corner from the hotel. Rainbowls make great bowls and smoothies and the Avocado Show is a De Pijp institution.
