German gastro hotel with amazing attention to detail

La Maison Hotel / Saarlouis / Saarland / Germany

I am always on the look out for new hotels. One of my best sources of inspiration is Design Hotels. That was where I found this place, La Maison Hotel in Saarlouis, Germany. I was searching for a place to stay on our drive south (heading for Italy) and was so happy to come across this gem, off the beaten track.

La Maison is made up of a number of different buildings with its own distinct character. In the middle you’ll have the old villa, which used to be the Higher Administrative Court. Now it is the center point and it is also where you’ll find the grand entrance.

In total there are 38 rooms spread over three different buildings. We went for one in the Gästehaus which appealed to us with is clean lines, all made of wood, only disrupted by some metal features. Saarlouis is right on the French border and I think it shows in the design. It is like a combo of the best of both words. The structure from the Germans and the joix de vivre from the French.

If you are a foodie, the onsite Louis Restaurant has been rewarded with a star in Guide Michelin. If you like something more laidback (like we did) there is also Bistro Pastis.

Welcome to La Maison!

This is what I call an entrance! Beautiful and imposing.

The design in the reception area is colorful and quirky with mismatching furniture.

The inside of the main building is warm and ecletic. This is where you can tell that the French border is just a couple of kilometers away. If these rooms could talk they would do so in French.

Clean lines and geometric shapes. The Gästehaus is surrounded by the lush gardens that belong to the hotel.

Our room, all in wood. It is cool to see how it all blends together. Almost feels like a modern (and more comfy) version of the tree houses from my childhood.

Clean, modern design and a really comfy bed.

The bathroom has the same kind of modern design like the room with straight lines.

The scenic Moselle river valley is just a short drive from the hotel. And the local wines are just a great as the scenery.

This place is perfect if you…

…are a foodie. At La Maison there is a restaurant, Louis, with a Michelin star. Or it could be like it was for us, that you are on a road trip and you want to stay at a hotel that takes design seriously.

My favorite thing about this place…

…when staying here I realized how rare it is with hotels that have real plants in the rooms. I hope more hotels would follow. Something else I really like here is the use of color and patterns (not in our room but in the common areas). That always gets a thumbs up from me.

What not to miss when staying here…

…if you are in the area the scenic Moselle River Valley is just a short drive away. It is not to be missed. Not only for the scenery but also for the excellent white wines.
