Intensely Scandi-looking gastro hotel in scenic Österlen, southeast Sweden
Vyn / Brantevik / Österlen / Skåne / Sweden
I am not really sure when Gastro Hotels started to become a thing but all of a sudden they were just there. In hindsight I guess it is a very logical consequence of the foodie trend that gained speed around the turn of the century. All those great restaurants located somewhat off the beaten track realized that in order to make it possible for more people to come and enjoy the food, they needed to offer somewhere to sleep. Somewhere where the quality of the lodging was equal to the food. And if no local options available, like was the case in many places, maybe best to take matters into your own hands. VYN is such a place.
VYN is located in Brantevik on the scenic coastline Österlen in south Sweden. This used to be a b&b that Daniel Berlin, one of Sweden’s most famous chefs, took over and gave a full make over before they opened in late 2023. Daniel used to run a Michelin two star restaurant in a nearby village for many years that he decided to close in 2020 due to tragic circumstances in the family.
The hotel is sitting in the middle of a field that is gently leaning towards the shores of the Baltic Sea. On clear days you can even see the Danish island of Bornholm. This region, Österlen, has been called the Tuscany of Sweden due to its rolling hills and cute little villages. The hotel has 15 rooms including 2 suites. Our room was located on the first floor where the slanted ceilings made it feel extra cozy. The look is very classic Swedish with few frills. Focus is on tactile surfaces, solid materials, blond wood, soft hues and Swedish design classics like Dux chairs and yellow cupboards from Källemo. I don’t know why, but we started to whisper to each other when we were staying here. There is something very calming and quiet about this place. Almost monasterial.
And then there is the food. We are not real Foodies (with a capital F. But don’t get me wrong. We love food!), so for us going to the back pocket, as we say in Sweden, the Food & Wine Bar, was right up our alley. If you are a foodie, VYN received two Michelin stars the first year of opening which says a lot about Daniel’s skills and ambition level. But trust me when I say that if you would only come here for a stay at hotel, you will not be disappointed. The hotel is really, really great. But with that said, it would be a shame not to eat something while staying here.

This place is perfect if you…
…are a foodie who is looking for a great place to eat and equally great place to stay over. If you like rural hotels among rolling hills with views of the sea and classic Scandi, wholesome design. You are going to love, love, love VYN.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the laid back vibe. Sometimes gastro hotels can attract a clientele that are not the most relaxed, to put it mildly. But here the vibe is very down to earth with affable service. There is a softness that I really like. You come here to relax and enjoy food and beautiful surroundings.
What not to miss when staying here…
…is to explore the area of Österlen. It is full of restaurants, cafés, bakeries, artisan shops and art galleries. But the best feature is the nature. Rolling hills with apple orchards lined by wonderful sandy beaches and steep cliffs.
