Bold, colorful urban hotel in vibrant East Village, NYC

The Standard East Village / New York City / NY / USA

New York is a tricky place when it comes to hotels. First issue is that most hotels are really expensive. Second is that you usually don’t get your dollars worth. Many times you end up paying a small fortune but you still end up staying in a shoe box sized room, with bad water pressure in the shower and the view from the room being a brick wall, three feet away. Luckily there are some exceptions. Ok, you still have to pay through your nose but at least you get some value for your buck. And this hotel, The Standard East Village is one of those places.

The Standard Hotel East Village is located in… yes, you’ve guessed it, the East Village. An eccentric and vibrant area with an artsy feel. And if this isn’t enough SoHo, Lower East Side, Tribeca, Greenwich Village and the Meatpacking District are all within walking distance.

The hotel is made up of two buildings, an old, classic NYC-style building (like the ones you see in all those movies and series from here) and a modern 21-story tower. The inside is just as colorful and vibrant as the neighbourhood it is located in. The ground floor is fairly dark, almost mysterious which is clashing (in a good way) with the rooms, that are bright with pastel colors and have great views of the area.

There are great options to eat in-house at the Standard Café, which also attracts the locals which is always is a great sign. On top of this you also have the Garden which is nestled on the side and the back of the building, which is a great little escape from the urban madness as well as the popular No Bar. And if you want to venture further, you have the magnificent city of New York, right at your doorstep.

Two buildings, one hotel. One old, classic New York building and a tower with 21 floors. This is the Standard East Village.

So New York

I love this mix of materials, textures and colors. The entrance is a great reflection of what you can expect on the inside.

M heading through the reception towards the elevators and our room. I must say that I love the quirky design of the lobby area. Who thinks of having tinted glass behind the reception desk?

Our room. Why not have a big mouth pillow and a blue leather bed. Come on! What’s not to love?

The style of our room was (except for the pillow and the leather bed) a fairly discreet affair with cream colored walls and wooden furniture.

M ready to hit the streets of NYC. This passage, from the elevators to the reception was on of my favorite parts of the hotel. I love this dark, sultry almost mysterious passage that connects the old and the new buildings.

Some ceiling art in the corridor, right by the elevators.

The Standard Café in the early morning light.

Everywhere you look there are interesting design features, like this staircase leading to the bathrooms.

I am a coffee fanatic and there are so many great places to get your caffein fix in NYC. This is Gasoline Alley Coffee, just a couple of blocks from the hotel. Loved to sit on this red bench and people watch as the city woke up.

If you want to venture out for breakfast, there is a great place called Lafayette Bakery just two blocks from the hotel.

Everywhere you look in NYC there is so much to take in. This is the amazing the Vessel, located and the northern end of the High Line Park.

Like I always say, if you don’t look up you never know what you’ll miss. I mean, just look at this view! This is the One World building, built right next to Ground Zero.

This place is perfect if you…

…are looking for a hotel with an edge. A hotel that isn’t just a generic NYC hotel but a place with fun, cheeky attitude. And if you want to stay in an area which isn’t overloaded with tourists, then this is your place.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is that it is a place that even the locals want to come and hang out, which is saying a lot in this city. The café and the bar have such a high quality level that even the picky New Yorkers are ok with giving their stamp of approval.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…I never know what to suggest when it comes to these big, fascinating cities with so much to offer. There are just too many things to do and to recommend. If I had to say something I guess my recommendation is to look up. There are so many exciting buildings and interesting architecture in this city.
