Copenhagen hotel with muted colors and a lot of hygge around the corner from Nyhavn

Hotel SKT Annæ / Copenhagen / Denmark

Just like any other capital Copenhagen has no shortage of great options when it comes to hotels. No matter what you are looking for, you will find it here, from simple to luxury and everything in between. No matter where on this scale, all (ok, maybe I can’t vouch for all, but at least all that I have stayed at over the years) have one thing in common, ”hygge”. This Danish way of life can sometimes be difficult to translate, but it is a certain kind of coziness and comfortable conviviality. An art form that the Danes have perfected. And one hotel that has this in spades, is this one, Hotel SKT Annæ.

Hotel SKT Annæ is sandwiched between Nyhavn and Amalienborg Castle and has an interesting past to say the least. There was a hotel that opened here called the Neptun back in 1851 by a Mrs Svendsen. It was an unlicensed hotel catering to smugglers and the likes where you had to have a code word to be let in. It wasn’t until 2013, when the current owners, the Hildebrandt family bought the property and started the full refurbishment. They added another 21 rooms and changed the name to Hotel SKT Annæ, after the square that the hotel is located on.

This 144-key hotel is an interesting step away from the classic Scandi-chic look with its blond wood and minimalist design. The color scheme has been inspired by the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøj which means that the main colors are black, creamy white and brown. This muted set of colors boost the coziness level of the hotel and somehow makes it feel extra suited for the colder months where you can retreat back and sit by the fire place to warm up.

Our room was small and very cozy with the same kind of muted hues as the rest of the hotel. This was combined with slanted ceilings, dark wood furniture, brass lamps from Bestlite and on the bed was this dark, dusty pink woolen blanket. The bathroom had these Italian tiles in elaborate patterns. All in all, a very un-Danish but very tasteful look.

Welcome to SKT Annæ Hotel in Copenhagen!

M is doing the check in process in the small and cozy reception.

Next to the reception is this tall, bright atrium, perfect if you have to find a place to work for a couple of hours.

Heading up to our room. I love these old staircases.

Our cozy little room.

The bathroom products are from another Copenhagen hotel chain, Guldsmeden. They are producing their own eco line which I was happy to find here.

Next to the reception there is a cozy area where you can enjoy a drink or two. These wooden floors were here back in the day when Hotel Neptun opened.

The bathroom products, made locally and with clever names.

Ond of my favorite things with this hotel was the breakfast, both the food as such, but maybe even more how it was set up. You actually went into the hotel kitchen to get it where it was set up, buffet style.

Danish buns are the best.

Outside, there is some outdoor seating where you can have something to eat and drink and take part in my favorite past time, people watching.

The hotel is right around the corner from one of the most popular and scenic sights of Copenhagen, Nyhavn.

I love to bike around the city when visiting and look at buildings. This old power plant is located just north of the city when heading towards the fancy suburb of Hellerup.

M is enjoying a coffee at our favorite coffee place in town, Coffee Collective in Nørreport.

This place is perfect if you…

…are looking for a hotel in Copenhagen for your city break. If you like your hotel to be dark, muted and enable a lot of that typical Danish ”hygge” and to be located next to Nyhavn in central Copenhagen, I believe this hotel is right up your street.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the location. It is located right in the middle of town, which means it is a perfect starting point for your Copenhagen adventure. Secondly I want to mention the breakfast. The Danes know how to do breakfast. I really like what it includes, but also how it is set up, where it is served in the hotel kitchen. Makes it feel like you are allowed behind the scenes or like you are doing something you are not supposed to do. By the way, don’t miss the delicious buns.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to get a bike to explore the city. This is my standard answer for all hotels I stay at and post in Copenhagen. A less generic proposal is to have coffee at Coffee Collective. They have outposts dotted around town and serve great coffee. My favorite location is the small kiosk in Nørreport. And here you are close to Torvehallerne, a great food market where you can stuff your face with all kinds of foods and treats.
