Eindhoven police station turned design hot spot where art plays central stage
Kazerne / Eindhoven / Netherlands
Eindhoven has slowly but surely developed into becoming the design capital of The Netherlands. It is home to the Eindhoven Design Academy (where one of my personal all time design favorites, Ilse Crawford used to work for more than 20 years) as well as the interior design icon Piet Hein Eek, who is based here. With this said, I guess it is fitting that Eindhoven would have a proper design hotel. Enter the Kazerne.
The Kazerne used to be a military police station that together with an adjacent industrial lot has been transformed into this unique hotel. Or actually this is more than only a hotel. It is an art exhibit space, a shop, a design destination, a restaurant and a hotel.
The 8 rooms, ranging from 45 to 140 square meters, are built around a courtyard where it is great to hang on a sunny day after you have visited all the places on your list. The room we stayed in was on two levels. The downstairs was all dark, muted colors with a very adult feeling. The upstairs sleeping loft was all in white with exposed beams and and pitched roof. For some reason I always sleep like a baby in these kind of lofts.

This place is perfect if you…
…want to experience a place that most tourists miss when going to The Netherlands. If you are into design you should really try to add this to your itinerary and make sure to secure a room at the Kazerne Hotel where you are surrounded by art. It is like staying in an art gallery. No, actually it is an art gallery
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the courtyard. We were lucky with the weather when we stayed here and it was a great place to kick back and relax after having spent the day crisscrossing around town.
What not to miss when staying here…
…is to go to Piet Hein Eek’s shop. It is the same place where they also create all of his products and from the shop you can see straight onto the factory floor. There is also a really good restaurant onsite and soon there will also be a PHE Hotel. I for one can’t wait to see what they have created.
