Design gem filled with traditional elements in eastern part of the stunning Italian Dolomites

Cedä M / Dosoledo / Veneto / Italy

One of my favorite things is to find great hotels off the beaten track. Hotels that people really have to search for in order to find, and also travel a bit further to stay at. And when these hotels are located in regions where a lot of fellow travelers usually visit, it is even better. This hotel, that you are about to get to know, is one of those places. It is Cedä M, located in the small, unassuming village of Dosoledo, in Val Comelico, on the eastern edge of the Italian Dolomites.

This farmhouse, dating back to 1807 was discovered by couple Markus Pescoller and Gertrud Niedermair from Brunico, a town further west in the Dolomites. Together with architect Daniella Zambelli they took on the project of turning this sleeping beauty into a modern, yet very traditional Alpine hideaway. As they stripped off the layers they discovered original wall paintings that they kept as they were showcasing the history of the building. I love when something raw, almost brutal is kept and paired with sleek, plain surfaces. Most of the interior is made of wood, namely spruce and larch wood sourced locally. Another local tradition that was honored when building Cedä M is the tin roof. According to Gertrud, rain is supposed to be heard. Love this comment!

There are five double rooms in Cedä M and several different areas, or lounges to hang out in, as well as a communal kitchen if you would want to cook up an Italian storm. We stayed in the room called fórnu, which was located on the ground floor. This actually used to be the ground floor kitchen before it was transformed into this subtly designed room, with vintage furniture, a huge wooden bed and some pop art gracing the walls.

This region has so much to offer and is a joy to explore and discover, where world-renowned destinations like Cortina is a short (although winding) drive away. So strap on your hiking boots or skiing boots and enjoy the great Dolomite outdoors, before you return to the tranquil haven that is Cedä M.

Welcome to Cedä M! An old farmhouse dating back to the beginning of the 19th century.

The back of the building. I love this intentionally messy looking wooden facade.

M is exploring the inside of the building, heading upstairs. This is my favorite photo from our stay here.

Old and new wood is combined in a beautiful way in the stairs.

Makes me so happy to see how some of the old, original features have been saved when refurbishing the house.

The communal kitchen that is open for all to use.

The upstair’s balcony…

…where you have a view of “downtown” Dosoledo and in the background, the majestic Dolomites.

And here is our room, where the wooden walls and ceiling becomes a nice contrast to the raw, original walls.

This set of vintage furniture fits so well into the design scheme of our room.

These retro-looking light switches fit so well in the design scheme of Cedä M.

When the plaster was removed during the renovations, these old wall paintings were found. So glad to see that they decided to keep them.

I love myself a huge bath tub.

The neighboring village of Padola.

A short drive from Dosoledo, you’ll find the stunning Misurina lake.

Me out hiking in the sunny Italian Summer on the Faloria mountain, next to Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The incredibly beautiful mountain range, Cristallo.

My favorite thing to do after a hike is to go for a refreshing dip in a cold mountain stream.

This place is perfect if you…

…want to stay at a unique hotel in the Dolomites, in a small unassuming village far away from the beaten track. If you appreciate a combo of Alpine traditions and modern, unexpected design, you will feel right at home at Cedä M.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is how the inside is so unexpected when you are standing outside. The contemporary interior, although with a lot of nods to traditions, is warm and sleek at the same time where you are surrounded by locally sourced wood.

What not to miss when staying here…

…is to visit the pizzeria up the road, the Dolomiti. It I such a great little place where the entire family is working to serve you delicious pizzas (and 3 Euro Aperol Spritz) in a retro-looking setting.
