Calm and cute river hotel in the Bavarian town of Amberg

Bootshaus / Amberg / Bavaria / Germany

I love to find hotels off the beaten track. If you move where most tourists spend their holidays there are usually a huge number of hotels to cater to the variating needs and expectations of us travelers. But there is something in the boldness of deciding to open an hotel in a location off the beaten track where the ambition is that the hotel itself would attract people to travel there. This is exactly what has happened with this boutique hotel, Bootshaus Amberg, in the town of Amberg, east of Nürnberg. This is a hilly region dotted with cute little villages where Amberg probably is the cutest one.

Bootshaus Amberg is housed in 5 different buildings right next to the tranquil river Vils. Some of these houses date back to the 13th century and the historic heritage is visible in the hotel. These old buildings, where there are no straight walls, have so many stories to tell which the owners have tried their best to manifest in the design. The hotel was created and now run by father and daughter team, Klaus & Eva Herdegen. Klaus has had a wish for many years to have his own hospitality business and got to fulfill this dream when opening the Bootshaus, which took almost 5 years to create.

There are 15 rooms and 4 suites at the hotel, all different in size and look. The hotel makes the most of its location by the river with the massive terrace hanging over the water which attracts hotel guests and locals alike. People pop by for a drink (local beer, of course!) or some hearty comfort food-y to eat, which the Bavarians do so well.

The town of Amberg is really picturesque with old stone houses, small alleys and squares filled with restaurants and bars. A perfect little off the beaten track place to enjoy some of that world famous Bavarian hospitality. And beer! And food!

Welcome to Bootshaus Amberg, right next to the tranquil river Vils.

The Bootshaus is housed in 5 different buildings where the oldest one dates back to the 13th century.

Our cozy room with white washed walls and low ceilings.

A clever wardrobe solution for small spaces.

My favorite feature of the hotel is the massive terrace hanging over the river.

In the restaurant an old wooden canoe has been made into a ceiling lamp.

Breakfast at the Bootshaus is a serious affair which is ordered á la carte. The Germans know how to serve a solid breakfast and the Bootshaus is no exception.
