Subtle and classy-looking boutique hotel in small town of Deventer, The Netherlands
Pillows aan de IJssel / Deventer / Overijssel / Netherlands
When someone starts talking about The Netherlands most people automatically think of Amsterdam or maybe Rotterdam but this small country is full of cute towns waiting to be discovered. One of these towns is the old Hansaetic town of Deventer. And it is in this town, or actually on the other side of the river from this town, where you’ll find this hotel, Pillows aan de IJssel.
The hotel belongs to the small Pillows chain with 6 hotels located in The Netherlands and Belgium. This one is situated in two buildings, one old and one new. The old one is a pink, stately manor house dating back to the 19th century that is accompanied by a newer building where the facade is all glass and steel and the two buildings are connected by a glass walkway.
There is a total of 29 rooms and they face either the lush Worp Park or downtown Deventer. To reach town there is a small ferry that departs from a jetty, right in front of the hotel.
The design of the hotel is subtle with muted tones and very few distractions. A discreet kind of design with a clear focus on quality and style. Even though this hotel is within reach of a market town, this is a hotel where you can just stay put if you want to. There is a great bed, great bar, great outdoor terrace, great food and great service.
RG inside info
This place is perfect if you…
…are looking for a high quality riverside hotel for a romantic weekend. If your thing is small, full-service hotels where you can spend the entire weekend inside if you wished to, then this could be a hotel for you.
My favorite thing about this place…
…is the location. I love that it is on the ”wrong” side of the river because it gives you uninterrupted views of the old Hansaetic town of Deventer from your hotel room. And there is a cute little ferry that takes you across the river.
What not to miss when staying here is…
…to visit the actual town of Deventer. It is easy to get stuck at the hotel on one side of the river, but it is well worth the short crossing for a walk, some shopping and something to drink before you return back home to the right side of the water.
