Subtle Amsterdam hotel in residential area next to lush Vondelpark

Pillows Anna van den Vondel / Amsterdam / Netherlands

Pillows is a Belgian/Dutch chain with 7 hotels in both urban and rural locations in different corners of these two countries. What I like about Pillows hotels (I have stayed at 5 of them so far) is that they have a kind of classy touch and the way they have managed to design them to feel like a home-away-from-home.

This Pillows hotel, Anna van den Vondel, is located in a residential part of Amsterdam, right next to the lush city park, Vondelpark, where the locals come to run, hang, play and relax. The hotel is situated in three red brick, 19th century buildings and has a very intimate style, like you are staying in some rich friend’s luxury townhouse.

The lobby/lounge area is open and welcoming without any reception desk. Instead we were greeted by a host that offered us a welcome drink before we even had time to put down our bags. The color scheme in this part of the hotel is dark with muted blues and greys combined with solid wood herring bone floors while our room was light and bright with fitted carpet. There are 31 rooms in total with the most comfy bed ever (which is actually the case in all the different Pillows hotels). The size of our room was fairly small (with Dutch standards) so if you want some more space, make sure to go for one of the larger ones. But at the same time it might not be necessary, this is Amsterdam after all where you usually spend very little time in you room. The city is just too damn exciting.

A new day begins at Borgo Eibn as the sun is slowly rising behind the mountains. So how does one spend a day at this amazing mountain resort, one might wonder…?

The interior is dark and sombre, beautifully combined with light wooden floors.

Our room was fairly small and very cozy with a mega comfy bed.

…it was time to hit breakfast. Yum!

M is all dressed up and ready to hit the streets of Amsterdam.

A little cozy corner of the hotel.

After filling our bodies with all those Italian breakfast goodies we walked it all off (yeah, right…) through our hike down to the lake. So stunning! It almost looks unreal.

In the lounge area there are books and games to keep you busy.

The back of the hotel is flooded by light. Outside there is a cute little garden where you can relax with a drink if the weather agrees with you.

Always makes me happy when a hotel has a private backyard to relax in.

RG inside info

This place is perfect if you…

…are looking to stay in a hotel in Amsterdam that is centrally located but not in the middle of the madness. A hotel that almost feels like a home away from home where you are well looked after and there is a sense of calmness.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the location. The hotel is in a residential part of Amsterdam right next to Vondelpark, a place where the locals come to work out, hang out or just go for a stroll.

What not to miss when staying here is…

…to go to the local shops (there is a STACH not too far from the hotel) and get some supplies for a picnic. Find a spot in Vondelpark and enjoy a lazy afternoon of eating and people watching.
